Meredith grey had her own troubling anxieties as well as Addison, she felt what Addie had felt she knew how to help and understood what she was feeling. For as long as Meredith could remember she was always told by her mother how worthless and ordinary she was. Ellis grey was always telling Meredith she was a waste of space,this hurt Meredith more deeply than she let on. She was only little but it never stopped. Even on Ellis's death bed she was telling Meredith how much she was dissatisfied by her and what she chose to do with her life. This deeply affected Meredith. From the age of 11 onward Meredith spiralled out of control she started self harming and developed an unhealthy relationship with food, of course Merediths mother never realised what was going on in her daughters life she was too busy with her work, Meredith was dropping weight like flies did when winter had begun, at the age of 22(first year on internship)she went to a psychiatrist to see if there was anything wrong with her because she isolated herself from everyone, even Christina couldn't get through to her so that was when she finally realised something was wrong.
Meredith was diagnosed with severe depression, anxiety an eating disorder and OCD, she was ashamed of herself for letting herself become this person, she hated herself for letting it get this out of control and she was deeply disturbed by what her dead mother would think of her, Meredith decided it would be better for everyone if she hid away from the world and shut everyone out, she didn't go to work, Derek covered for about 2 weeks telling them she had a bug but it didn't last so Derek gave in and told Richard what was happening although Derek at that point didn't realise how serious Merediths situation was about to get, so at that point Richard put her on a leave of absence. Derek her then boyfriend and Christina had to go and check on her daily to make sure she was alive and it got to a point in which she was on suicide watch, eventually it was too much for them to handle and Meredith got 136'ed (a psych hold which lasts for 72hours) and after that she got put on a section 2 of the mental health act which meant she was sentenced to 28 days locked in a psych ward against her will.
When Meredith was in the ward she was so annoyed at everyone for leaving her there and she blamed them for locking her up, in hindsight she knew it was best for her because she was so unsafe at her home, nobody in her life at that point could keep her safe enough in the community. She would constantly run away from home and try and harm herself, she was once in the ICU for a week in a coma for a suicide attempt which pushed Derek and all of her friends off the edge, they campaigned for her and they eventually got psych to agree to 136 her.
While Meredith was in the ward she had to earn passes to leave the hospital( eg go on a walk with a nurse for 10mins) the better she was getting the more passes she would get and she would eventually get to be left alone, and the best pass you could receive was a overnight pass where you could go home for one night. Meredith really struggled to keep her ED under control but eventually she got to a healthy enough weight that she got discharged from the Ed unit ,and eventually after getting 5 overnight passes without any incidents (self harming, purging or any suicide attempts) she got discharged from the psych ward, on the condition that her CPN would visit 2 times a week to check on progress to see if the house is safe (no sharps or chords), she would have to see her psychologist and psychiatrist 2 times a week also as well as attending group ED therapy and outpatient clinics to check on her weight.
Meredith eventually got better although she was still on her meds and had weekly meetings with her psychiatrist and psychologist, she no longer had her CPN visits once a week she had them every 6months. Meredith has had no further incidents since being discharged (she had been close on multiple occasions) so she was proud of herself.
Meredith didn't want Addie to end up in a psych ward like her so she knew she needed to help in order for Addison to avoid the fate she had.
