*Flashback to special summer school*I brushed the dirt off my shooters as I changed into comfortable sneakers. The girls and I did a cool down as the coach informed us about our next game. 'We're so going to crush those losers.' One girl said. 'Like literally.' The violent girl replied. We all gave her the no no look afraid that she'd get benched again. It seemed like she had come to girls rugby to release her pent up frustrations.
I was walking down the field when I heard someone running up to me. It was the captain of the boy's team, Damien. He offered to teach me how to spin the ball when passing and I definitely needed that so I agreed. I thought it was just a captain duty until he began making inappropriate moves during the private sessions.
I told him I was cancelling and the following day he ambushed me and trapped me in a corner. A picture was taken to make it seem like Damien and I were kissing but Tiago had punched Damien before he could molest me.
The photo was sent to Eldon who thought kissing another girl was the best way to get revenge on me. What hurt me the most was that he had actually taken the blonde girl on a date and proceeded to play the mouth mingle with her.
'I'm so sorry, if only I knew the full truth I wouldn't have tried to get back at you. Next time, I'll ask you before making any assumptions.' Eldon had apologized and my feeble mind decided to forgive him.
*Flashback over*He never stuck to his promise because before he spat venomous words in my face and before he walked out, he never asked for the full truth.
...........A loud buzz caused me to awaken with alarm instinctively jumping off the leather sofa. Looking around, I noticed my phone playing my 5am alarm. I slammed the dismiss button as I stretched the tiredness out of me. Lazily sitting back on the couch, I rubbed the sleep from my eyes as events from the previous night came in like a stormy weather.
I began to recall all the tempestuous words Eldon and I shared but what crushed me were the last words. Eldon had a front row seat in my life were he witnessed how my own parents treated me first hand. He knew of all the mean insults, the beatings that left scars, the disowning, the abandonment when I was still young and the one time they put my brother in the hospital.
I never understood why they would treat their own children like that; but it hurt because I still loved them. I had their blood running through my veins after all.
But for Eldon to use my biggest weakness against me like that was a new level of low that I didn't know he could get to. Maybe it was all in the heat of the moment but it would take years for me to forgive him and even decades to forget.
It petrified me how a person could be so heartless but in all honesty, I wasn't too kind myself. Nevertheless, my mind conversation ended with the thought that I would not speak to him for a while and keep a distance.
As I was still sitting on the couch thinking, I saw Tiago sprinting down the stairs with the car keys in hand. 'Let's go.' He said already tugging on my wrist. 'Where? I look like a mess.' I asked but he never replied. I followed him into the car bare foot with puffy eyes and a concerned frown. I had never seen Tiago so serious and concentrated so I began to shiver a little both from fear and the chilly weather. He steered the wheel with his right hand as he handed me his sweater with the other.
'Aw such a romantic.' I teased but he didn't entertain it for a second. Now I knew something was definitely wrong. Tiago would never not take the opportunity to tease me back and bicker with me. 'What's going on?' I asked to no avail.
We drove miles before pulling up in a large building displaying the words 'Amka medical centre.' My heart dropped at the endless possibilities running through my mind.
'Am I pregnant? Did my water break?' I stupidly said glancing at my shorts. As expected, Tiago remained silent gesturing me to follow him in though I didn't expect him to break out in a run. I pushed my short legs to catch up to the boy with long strides. He made his way to the front desk frantically trying to get the attention of one of the ladies there.
'I'm here for Eldon Martinez.' He said to a middle age lady. I looked at him blankly.
'What was Eldon doing here? Did he come to visit someone or what?' I thought.
'I'm sorry but we only allow close family.' She said looking at Tiago politely. Evidently not amused, Tiago gave her the stank face.
'What more do you want if not an identical face!' He shouted at the poor lady who retreated back agitated.
A doctor in a long white coat and clip board in hand came in for the rescue. 'Hello sorry for that. Are you Tiago?' He asked. Tiago nodded and was asked for his full name and relation to Eldon. The doctor who introduced himself as Doctor Simmons looked at me quietly asking who I was.
'Oh I'm Daisy Eldon's uhm...' I didn't know what we were anymore.
'She's our sister.' Tiago pitched in saving my stammer. 'Sorry but can I have your full name?' he inquired.
'Sure. Its Daisy Lorelei Enya Azra Damaris.' I said in a matter of seconds.
Doctor Simmons tried his best to keep professional but I could see the baffled expression that appeared for mere seconds. He gestured for me and Eldon to enter his office away from the other patients and their families.
'I'm sorry to tell you this but your brother has been in the OR for 4 hours 48 minutes. We are doing our best.' Is all he said.
'Wait what happened?' I asked still unaware of anything. He looked at Tiago almost questioning how I didn't know then decided to tell me when Tiago remained close lipped.
'The boy was in a motorcycle accident.' He paused allowing me to digest the information.
'The accident itself was minor but the helmet crashed around his head causing major brain damage. It is a miracle he is still alive but the traumatic head injury caused his body to enter an unresponsive state.'
He explained but I couldn't understand a word. It all seemed like a dream and doctor Simmons was making it more confusing.
'He's in a c-coma.' Tiago finally said his voice breaking. A coma? Every ounce of knowledge I had seemed to disappear as I failed to recall what an accident was, what a head injury was and what a coma was.
'I d-don't understand.' I hiccupped as I vigorously shook my head. 'This is a prank. You've sure got me this time.' I said to Tiago with a bitter chuckle. He remained silent and expressionless.
'Daisy.' Tiago whispered softly.
Looking into his eyes I could tell that it wasn't a joke but I wasn't ready to accept it. My guts twisted and I suddenly felt sick. That made me prefer pregnancy to the current situation. My body felt paralyzed and my brain hurt as I tried to make sense of it all.'I will keep you updated.' Doctor Simmons informed us before leading us to the waiting rooms. Tiago took a sit as I miserably slid down the wall sitting in a crouched position on the floor.
Time gave me the ability to think and when it all hit me, my throat began to feel like sandpaper. I coughed a little but it got even drier to the point where it hurt.
'I need some air.' I barely said before walking out of the building near the parking lot. My stomach twisted making me feel a dizzying nausea. Anguished tears gushed out rolling down my now pale cheeks. I felt my throat constrict painfully as I gasped for air to breathe.
The mere thought of a helmet crushing around his head made me hyperventilate. 'Daisy, Daisy breathe.' Tiago came running out to me. 'Breathe in....breathe out.' He repeated trying to calm me down. I did for a few seconds before I felt light in the head and everything became black.
