"What the hell happened to you?" John asked as he ran up to Alex.

"Seriously you didn't hear? I thought my fight with Arlo would have been big news around the school." Alex grumbled as he pushed passed John.

"YOU FOUGHT ARLO?"

"I don't know if it would be considered a fight but ya I guess I did." The blond responded as he unlocked his apartment door.

Alex pushed the door open and stepped inside and glanced up to see John staring at him with wide eyes.

"You coming in or not?"

John quickly nodded and followed him in.

"I ran into Arlo in the hallway and he put me in my place." Alex explained as he put air quotes around his statement.

"Wow, I can't believe the king let you get away with only minimal damage."

"Arlo actually didn't knock me out. It was two guys with red and orange hair. Friends with a girl named Remi."

"Wait you not only fought Arlo but also fought the queen and the other two highest ranks in our grade?" John asked shocked.

"Still wouldn't call it a fight." Alex responded still annoyed.

"Dang you've made enemy's with every high ranker in our grade besides Sera and it's only your second day! You my friend have quite the talent." John joked as he plopped down on the couch.

"Why are to here John?" Alex asked as he sat down on the adjacent seat.

The black haired boy stared at Alex as he carefully picked what words say.

"Who took me home last night and why did he call you Mr. Brighten?"

Alex let out a deep breath as he leaned forward.

"Just a driver that's got connections to my parents."

"But it was so nice. There's got to be more too it." John pushed.

"He's a hired ride, what more do you want?"

"Why did you really get so annoyed at Sera's last name?" John blurted out.

Alex's eyes widened as he moved his eyes over to Johns. He stared right back at him, edging up on his seat in anticipation.

"Wow you really don't care if you jump the gun. We've known each other two days and you think you have the right to ask me that?" Alex asked as he stood up and walked out of the room.

"If it involves Sera then I have a right to know!"

"And why's that John? You're not even dating her! All you two are to each other is friends!"

"You take that back!" John threatened as he spun Alex around to face him.

Alex narrowed his eyes at John. The two both stood at the same hight and had similar builds. They were almost mirrors of each other.

"Seeing how defensive you are of Sera shows me two things. either you're blindly following her and ok with what her parents do or two, you know and agree with what they stand for."

"What the hell does that mean?" John questioned.

"Do you have any idea what the Amarini family is known for?" Alex retorted.

"Uhm.... no."

"They do technologies. They're one of the biggest technical firms in the nation."

"What's wrong with that?"

"They also back the authorities. They donate millions every single year in exchange for leeway in their dealings."

Johns eyes widened at Alex's statement.

"That's not true..... that can't be true. What proof do you have?" John shouted.

Alex let out another deep breath and scanned Johns eyes. All he could find was worry.

"Come on I'll explain what I can."

The two made their way back to the living room and sat in their respective seats.

"I know about Sera's family because my own used to do business with them."

"Wait wh—"

"Do you want me to explain or no?" Alex cut him off.

"Ya sorry."

"Good. I never met Sera until I came here. Both of our parents never talked anything other then business and it was never at each others houses. But one time was different. Sera's parents came to my house to talk about a revolutionary drug that could change the world but my parents didn't like how they presented the idea. They found it weird how they wanted to create drugs instead of technology.

John nodded his head.

"Well my parents did some digging and found out the authorities approached them to create it. In return they could keep part of the profits and they would turn a blind eye to any shady deals they conducted. When my parents found out they went ballistic. They cut all ties with the Amarini's and told them never to approach us again."

"Why does your family hate the authorities?"

"My parents always told me they can't be trusted. Too much dependency on the higharchy and when your a family of cripples they don't care about you at all."

"So that's why he called you Mr. Brighten. You changed your name." John whispered to himself.

Alex peaked over at John and found him staring at his feet. Alex could see the sweat rolling down his face and his knuckles staring to turn white from gripping to hard.

"You good?" Alex asked as he put his hand on Johns shoulder.

The boy shivered and stood up to meet Alex.

"Thanks for being honest with me and I'll be honest with you. I don't trust the authority's either. I don't really want to get into it but I agree with them not caring about either of us."

"Good to know."

"But I don't agree with what you said about Sera. There's no way she would be ok with her family doing illegal things. There's no way."

"Maybe she didn't know. My parents only told me cause I needed the information to protect myself."

The two stood quietly as an awkward silence loomed over them.

"I should get going." John said finally breaking the silence.

"Ya I'll see you out."

The duo made their way over to the exit where Alex opened the door allowing John to step out into the hallway. But as Alex started to close the door John stuck his foot in to stop him.

"Sorry about tonight. I know you've got your reasons to hide things and I shouldn't push about your past. I hope that we can still be friends."

Alex smiled causing John to let out a sigh of relief.

"Ya me too."

The rest of Alex's night was uneventful. Once John left he made himself a quick dinner and knocked out any homework he had. Once he finished up his last assignment he leaned back in his chair and peaked at his clock.

11:15 p.m.

"Damn it's late. Thankfully tomorrow's Friday."

The blond pushed himself up and made his way to his room. He stepped into his bathroom and took a quick shower and brushed his teeth. After drying off and putting his hair into a pony tail the blond jumped into bed and nuzzled under his covers where he slowly sifted off into a peaceful night of dreamless sleep.
