NEWT POV

"Elizabeth, please, you have to remember something else!" I beg. "This could be life or death!"

"Newt, calm down." Thomas says gently.

I shut my mouth, breathing hard.

"Do you know what they do, Elizabeth?" I ask, calmer. "The implants?"

"Well..." Elizabeth sighs. "I don't know for sure, but mine has been making me forget things. Small things for now, like what day it is or what I went into a room to do but...it scares me."

"Thomas, have you been forgetting things?" I ask hurriedly, suddenly concerned.

"Well, no, not really." He says. "But...it sometimes feels like my thoughts aren't my own. Like someone's trying to make me believe lies." He looks down. "But I don't know...maybe they're true."

"Thomas, what if it-" My breath catches in my chest. "Tommy, what if it kills you?"

He looks at me, the moon reflecting in his eyes. "It won't." He says.

My eyes meet his and I realize that I couldn't survive without him. I just couldn't. Not without his smile, his laugh, his hand against mine. Not without the late nights talking, his hands in my hair, his lips against mine. I just couldn't. So I choose to believe his words.

"Okay." I say quietly. I stand, suddenly not being able to stand being in this small, stuffy room. "I gotta go." I say, walking quickly out the door.

I take a huge breath of air when I fling open the door, putting my hands on my knees.

"Hey, Newt, are you okay?" I hear Thomas ask behind me.

I throw my arms around his neck.

"You had better not bloody die, alright?" I whisper in his ear.

"Newt, I'm not dying." He says, chuckling.

"You don't know that." I say, burying my face in his neck.

He puts his hand in my hair. "But I won't. I promise."

I bite my lip. "You swear?"

"I swear I won't die."

I pull away. "Sorry." I mutter.

He tilts his head. "Don't be sorry."

I smile. "I'm glad you promised not to die, Tommy."

"I'm glad I'm not going to die too." He says, wrapping his arm around me. "Hey, listen."

"Yeah?" I ask, resting my forehead on his shoulder.

"I can't actually promise that I'm not going to die."

"Yes, you can." I say forcefully. "You did it before."

"That was coincidence." He whispers. "But I'll try not to die."

I pull him as close to me as possible. "No. You won't die. Don't be an idiot. We don't die."

"We haven't died." He corrects.

"NO!" I cry. "I cannot lose you, Tommy! I can't!" He opens his mouth. "No. You don't understand. I need you, Tommy. I need you. I can't lose you, I can't. I-" He kisses me.

"Newt, you won't." He looks me in the eyes. "But I can't promise."

Tears start to fall down my cheeks. "But-" I choke. "I love you, Tommy."

"I love you too." He kisses my forehead. "Alright, I'm gonna go to bed. You wanna come?"

I shake my head. "I'm gonna stay up a bit longer, kay?"

He nods. "Night. Love you."

"I love you too." I let go of him and walk over to my rock by the beach.

I dangle my hand over the edge and let my fingers brush the water. Then, I feel a notch on the side of the rock. I run my fingers over it. It's...letters? I bend over. I gasp. They read: YOU'RE NEXT.

I fall backwards into the water in surprise. I feel hands wrap around my arms, pulling me underwater. I gasp, but as my mouth goes underwater it turns to gurgles. I kick manically.

"LET GO OF ME!" I shout, a stream of bubbles flowing from my mouth.

I can't breath. I can't...I c...I pass out.

THOMAS POV

I lay in bed, tossing and turning. I couldn't fall asleep and it's been two hours. Two hours since Newt decided to say up. It's midnight. I can't stand it anymore. I sit up and walk outside.

"Newt?" I call quietly. "Newt?"

I walk around the beach until I see him lying on the beach. Wait. That can't be right. I run over to him.

"Newt?" I say with more urgency. "Newt, are you alright?"

I kneel beside him and feel his pulse. It's not there.

"HELP!" I shout. "SOMEONE! ANYONE! HELP!"

I sit in the hospital building's waiting room, panicking. My head is in my hands and the only thing I can think of it Newt. My breathing is way too fast to be safe and my world is spinning. A young, red-haired doctor took him away a few hours ago.

"Oh my god, Thomas." I hear beside me.

I look up and see Elizabeth's bright green eyes meeting mine.

"What's wrong?" She asks. "What happened?"

"YOU KNOW WHAT SHUCKING HAPPENED, ELIZABETH!" I roar, my head beating horribly. "IT'S YOUR FAULT! IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT! HE'S HURT BECAUSE OF YOU!  YOU!" I start breathing heavily, glaring a shell-shocked Elizabeth.

"Thomas, I-"

"NO!" I shout. "NO! NO! NO!" I can't say anything else. My world is crumbling around me. I can't think straight. "NO!" I sink to my knees, shoving my head back into my hands. "No." I whisper, shaking. "No."

Then, Minho walks in. "Thomas?" He says. "Thomas, you need to listen to me." He kneels in front of me.  "Thomas?" He asks. "Thomas?" I nod. "Okay. Newt is going to fine. You're fine and the same thing happened to you, right?" I nod again. "But listen, we need to find whoever's doing this."

"It's her fault." I whisper. "She did this to him. To me. She could kill us all, Minho."

"Thomas..." Elizabeth says gently. "Thomas, this isn't my fault. I told them about-"

"YOU SAID YOU TOLD THEM ABOUT NEWT, ELIZABETH!" I yell, taking my head out of my hands, eyes red.

"No, no, I said that I-" She stops herself. "Yes, but I told them far more about you. Unless..." She thinks.

"Unless what?" I growl.

"Unless they did it to hurt you." She says. "Yes. That wouldn't surprise me."

"Why is it always me?" I say. "What did I even do this time?"

Minho rises to his feet. "Thomas, it's alright. We'll be fine. Newt'll be fine, okay?"

I stand shakily. "O-okay. If you're sure."

Then, I hear a scream. His scream.
