“You can’t fucking do this!” I screeched at the man who carelessly sat in front of me.
“Oh, yeah? I am chief director of this department and what I say, goes.”
“I earned my spot into this department fair and square. I was invited in because I am capable of everything you throw in my way.”
“Yes, but you are the only girl who has been offered a place on my board. I have worked my ass off to make sure that we are one of the top police departments in the nation. We have some the highest expectations, highest ranked officers, and the stuff we do is not child’s play. If I were to so carelessly accept a mere girl into my team, what do you think others would think of that? What do you think they would think of me?”
“You wanna know what they would think of you if you didn’t accept me? You’d be known as the nation’s biggest, most sexist chauvinist. I deserve just as much of a spot as any of your men. I could probably fight better, analyze better, defend better, and I sure as crap am not afraid to kick ass. Oh, and for the record, I am very much a woman.”
He takes a moment and looks and me and back at my file. Slowly, I know he is considering because I can tell by the frustrated look in his eyes. Okay, I have been bluffing a bit back there, but I have done this before. Only the difference now is I’m not working with my right and left hand men. Regardless of that, he’d be stupid not to take me in. Graduating at the top of one of the best schools dealing with this is not easy and plus, I already have had all my combat training done at an early age, so all I need now is the learn to cooperate with other people on the force.
“This is what I propose.” he brings up after a while of silence.
I don’t want a damn proposition. I want a place on the team! Doesn’t he get that? Despite all the infuriating thoughts that are going through my head, I hold my tongue as I wait for him to continue.
“I’ll let you work with my two best officers and if you can keep up with them, then consider yourself on the team.”
He’s putting me on probation? What the hell? Does he really not think I can handle simple little investigation? MEN! I turn my attention back to him only to find him calling two people up from his walkie-talkie. I briefly catch the names ‘Troy’ and ‘Stephan.’ “Great.” I think, maybe these two will be slightly better than their douche of a boss.
Not too long afterwards, two casually dressed officers walk in engaged in a light conversation.
The chief cleared his throat, gaining the attention of the two men.
“Gentlemen, I would like to introduce to you the third member of your team, Raelynn Michaels.”
I bring my hand up in a sign of acknowledgement as I look back at the incredulous look plastered on their faces. There is a clear stare off between the two of them and me. We stand there in silence, not moving, surrounded by silence before one of the officers bursts into laughter.
“You got me, Chief. Well played, and for a second I thought you were serious.”
We all look at the man in front of me. He, for sure is screwed up in the head.
“Uh, Officer Rivera, I am very much sincere. No joking matter. As of right now, Ms. Michaels is on probation. The two of your will include her in all your cases for the time being, and in time, we’ll see if she makes the team. So, you are truly mistake if you thought I was joking.”
