            “Stephan, do we need them immediately?”

            “We need them as soon as possible. Don’t you want to finish this case?”

            “I do, but they probably just drove like 20 straight hours to get here. As good as they are, they are human, and they need some rest.”

            “Okay Raelynn, but I want them in their best shape tomorrow morning.”

            “Of course.”

            Troy walks me down to the main entrance, but before I step out into the upcoming night, he grabs my wrist.

            “Raelynn, I’m sorry about this morning. I should’ve tru- ”

            “Dude, you’re acting like I’m going to die.” I joke at his solemnity.

            “I know. Because you are.” I glance up with a questioning look only to have something being plunged into my navel.

            “Troy…” I breathe out.

            “Nope. Guess again.” Slowly, before my very eyes, whoever was once Troy starts to morph into something he’s not. Indistinguishable features start to appear, and bit-by-bit it starts to show feminine recognition. My vision starts to blur as I can feel my body become immobile. And as I start to plasticize like the many casualties before me, I can hear a distant voice scream my name. Before I can realize what’s happening a gunshot fires and some substance rains down on me. Rock salt. It’s Dean. The last thing I see before my heart starts to plasticize is Dean’s face. I look into his soft green eyes that are brimming with tears, and I try to smile before it overcomes me…

            “I know; it’s okay.” I stand on my tiptoes to give him a quick kiss and he meets me half way. “Okay, I gotta get home before the curfew.”
