“Come in.” The chief’s voice responds to my knock.

I open the door and turn back once to see Troy give me a reassuring smile and follow in behind me. The both of us settle in the large but compact room. He chief has a smile present on his face directed toward me as if he knows the purpose of visit.

“Raelynn, is there something you wanted to discuss?”

            Of course… he knew.

“Chief, with all due respect here, I believe you have set us up.”

            “What gives you that idea?”

“I don’t – It was a test.” The thought clicks in my head. Of course he would want to test me. Again, he won’t stop underestimating my abilities.

“You didn’t think I could take a simple murder like this. You doubt my abilities of working as part of the team. You’re still afraid that I will ruin your reputation as one of the best police departments in the US. You can’t afford the help of a girl, not yet at least.” I am fuming by now and Troy has stood up and either he stands with me or against me.

I turn towards him with a pleading look. He saw me. He knows what I did.

“Is it true, chief? Did you really set us up for a test?” Troy questions as he pulls me against him.

“Yes, and I have to say, Raelynn, you did an outstanding job. I tend to be able to stay one step ahead during a set-up, but not only did you keep up, you managed to pull out two steps in front of me.”

By now I had turned around in Troy’s arms to face the chief and what he was saying. Does this mean I qualify as part of the team? Like for real?

            “ -but.”

Of course there was a ‘but’ in there.” I slump back in Troy’s arms in temporary defeat.

“You do realize that there are still so many more applicants waiting in ‘line’ for a position on this team, right? The only reason you were actually qualified to stand on probation with my best two men was that recommendation letter I received from your instructors. No, I am not underestimating you nor am I questioning your potential. From the very letter I received from your teachers, I understood your understanding and ability, but that does not automatically qualify for a position. You can ask Troy, Stephan for that matter, but I tested them left and right. And with you being put on their team, which just means that they’re going to go through so many more tests. Today, you only showed that you stick to your judgment and trust it enough to accuse me. At this rate, in a year or less you’d be on the team. I really do like you Raelynn, I do. And I know the last thing you would is ruin my reputation.”

At the end of his ‘semi-speech’ and he has a look of pride in his eyes, as do I. I don’t know whether to be elated or bummed though. I kinda just got told that I have potential, yet at the same time I now know that my probation time period will last about a year. I guess the feelings don’t cancel out because I am in a clash of emotions.

“Oh and Raelynn,” the chief starts. “Chase sends you his regards. I heard it was quite the way of torture.” He winks and I turn beet red. I nod my head and quickly usher Troy out the door and desperately hope he didn’t see my blush.

Fortunately, we make it out of the building without Troy questioning me about anything. But once we step outside the building he asks the predicted question.
