After a shower, (with warm water no less!) We made pancakes for breakfast and Karen didn't even get mad when I got batter everywhere. I was so excited that they weren't going to kick me out and they even hang out with me and don't get frustrated.
Everything had been running smoothly until a few days later when we are sitting in the living room playing a card game Karen called 'Go Fish' it was really fun and I even understood it. Though I wasn't as good at it as Karen.
"Do you have a 3?" Karen asks.
I gasp and give it to her, "How did you know?"
"I know everything," She says leaning in towards me.
"No you're a cheater," I exclaim pulling my cards to myself so she can't see them.
"I would never," she says pulling her hand to herself in a dramatic gasp.
At that I burst into a fit of giggles, throwing my head back and covering my mouth with my hand.
"You're so silly," I laugh.
"Not as silly as you little one."
I blushed and looked away quickly so she wouldn't notice.
"Well what do I have here?" I hear behind me.
I gasp, "Henny!"
"Oops," I whisper after realizing what I said.
"Hello, little one." Hen says as she crouches down to my level.
"Hi." I squeak.
Hen stands up and walks to Karen kissing her on the head, "Hey baby."
"I think we have something to talk about. How about you guys finish cleaning up while I wash up a little. Meet me in the living room." Hen says calmly shooting Karen a look clearly conveying something I can't understand.
Looking down at my hands so that I'm not invading their moment. I stack up the cards and put them in their box. Standing up I walk towards the shelf that has all the games and put them down exactly where Karen had picked them up from.
When I went to grab the cups and bring them into the kitchen I noticed they were gone and in their place was Karen and Hen wearing identical smiles. I smiled back still unsure on whether I was in trouble or not. I shuffled forward holding my hands to my chest looking down.
Then there was a hand blocking my view of the plush carpet. Peeking up I see Hen reaching for me. Grabbing her hand tentatively I follow where she tugs me all while blushing and peaking up at them.
She leads me to the couch and pushes me down in the middle of it before she sits on one side of me while Karen sits on the other side.
Karen lifts my chin up using one crooked finger, "Look at us Alexis, we want to see your beautiful eyes."
"There she is. " Hen says when I look up.
"We want to start out by saying you are not in any trouble baby we just have a few things we would like do discuss with you." Hen whispers pulling me to face her.
Hen then pulls a sheet of paper from behind her and hands it to me. Looking at the paper all I see is random numbers and symbols arranged in weird patterns.
"What is it?" I ask looking between Karen and Hen.
"It is a contract," Karen says carefully.
"For what?"
"Love can you read?" Hen asks.
Embarrassed I look down my face red with shame as I shake my head no. Was it that obvious? If it was then why did they keep me? Why let me sleep in their home in a bed no less?
"What did I say about those beautiful eyes?" Karen asks lifting my head again.
"To keep them up." I whisper back Still embarrassed.
"That's right, so why did you turn them away from us?" Karen asks.
I whimper trying to pull away but stop at the words that come out of Henrietta's mouth.
"Don't pull away from Mommy little one."
