Arny

SMARTEST PRISONER

MIDNIGHT MEADOW PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL

It was strange to have a cell to myself again. For the past few days, Osiris had been there to keep me company; she filled the emptiness. The silence was filled with her mumbling to the voices in her head. But now, she wasn't here, filling the silence - keeping me company. I'm ashamed to admit, even to myself, that I missed the small, broken room. But what was even more shameful was the fact I missed Osiris more.

The door opened with a small creak and my mouth formed a twisted smile. A security guard was at the door, holding a pair of silver shackles, signaling to me that it was time for me to go on a trip. No words were spoken as he moved towards me. I placed my arms out in front of me, with no signs of resistance or struggling. The guard then proceeded to lock my arms together, pulling me gently out of the door by the silver bracelets.

"Oh, do you want to hold my hand too? Or am I allowed to walk on my own like a big boy?" I imitated in a child-like voice, batting my eyelashes at the guard, who, ironically was shorter than me.

He grunted and rolled his eyes, like usual. He then pulled me off towards the office that I hadn't been to in a while. I'm positive that I know the reason why she called me here today.

"Good afternoon, Arny. How is my favourite patient today?" Doctor Papa beamed at me, sitting down in his usual chair behind his desk. His notepad and pen were already out on the desk, my name scribbled across the front in neat cursive.

"Let's cut the crap, shall we? I haven't been to see you for a while, months in fact. Now all of a sudden, you call me out of the blue to come here today." I raised my eyebrow at the doctor who was sitting across from me.

He let out a sigh, his smile faded slightly. Dr. Papa placed his notepad and pen down on the desk in front of himself and stood up walking towards the coffee machine that was in the corner of the room. He poured the hot liquid into a mug.

"Yes, you are correct. The reason I called you in here today was to discuss the relationship that you and Miss Reine have. Now, I'm told, that the friendship between you and her is quite bizarre." Dr. Papa said calmly, turning around and walking slowly over to his desk.

A slight chuckle escaped my lips.

Friendship? Do friends try and stab you in the throat? Do they attack you randomly? No.

"Osiris is a bizarre little lady," I laugh a little, "I mean, she did try and kill me the other day. However, since then, we have now formed a truce. A friendship of sorts, as you wish to call it."

Doctor Papa just nodded slightly, listening intensely, to see if I'd say anything more. The doctor in front of me wrote some notes down in my book; the thing with psychiatrists is, they always seem to be interested in your life. They try and get you to spill secrets, tell them your problems. But really, they are interested in your brain and how it works, what's wrong with it, how to fix it. They're never interested in you as a person. Doctors make you think that they care, but they don't. All they want to do is give you drugs and try and fix you, to make you "normal".

"Okay, Arny. So, do you like Osiris?" Doctor Papa asked, biting down on the pen slightly.

"Well, I suppose I'm more fond of her now. We have grown closer, we have formed a kind of bond." I smiled at the doctor, he was completely oblivious that our bond is our escape plan. "I like the way her brain works. It's similar to my own, yet she makes it so cool and lady-like, you would never guess she is a complete monster."

Doctor Papa continued to nod, his pen eating my words like breakfast. I knew he was convinced that Osiris and I had formed a friendship. I knew I had to answer the questions put to me, but I didn't have to give so much detail. I shocked myself with how passionately I spoke of Osiris.

"Next question, how do you think Osiris' arrival at the hospital affected your time here?" Doctor Papa quizzed.

"She's made the short time I have known her quite enjoyable. Our little fallout the other day was a minor thing, easily solved. Our brain has the same wiring, so it wasn't anything I couldn't handle. I know everyone thinks she is a danger to my life, but this isn't true. In fact, I think she poses more of a danger to everyone else here. Maybe more so, now that we are friends." I explained, not even thinking about the words that came out of my mouth.

"Well, Arny. I think our little drop-in session today has proven to be useful, it has provided me with a lot of insight. It appears that young Osiris has made quite the impression on you. From a professional point of view, it appears she has improved your attitude. You seemed to have improved quite a lot since she has been here. I'll be recommending that the situation is minimal and neither of you are a danger to one another, also I'll make sure that he knows how much she has changed you. I'm certain that you two will be reunited once again."

"Really? So you're going to trust us in the same room again? After she tried to murder me?" I asked, a little surprised.

"Unless you'd rather be alone." He added, taking a sip from his mug, "it appears that you have mixed feelings towards the girl. You were, just a moment ago, saying it was a minor thing, nothing you cannot handle. Maybe you don't hate her. I think that you're either in love with her, or you despise her, the only way for you to find this out is to spend more time with her." The doctor said, looking like he was giving me genuine advice, as if he were my friend.

"I mean you are the doctor." I shrug, flopping onto the sofa. I just wanted to leave the room, to be back in either cell.

"Arny, you are dismissed." The doctor said, "but I think it would be best if you didn't get into any more trouble of any kind. Whether it's with Osiris or not. It's no secret that you are dangerous but paired with someone you are equal to. Well, that can be rather deadly for either one of you. I know that if the pair of you tried, you could be good friends, perhaps something more. But if not, I understand. But we all know the punishment for your anger issues."

"We are friends." I growled, "so if you would please excuse me. I have other things I would rather be doing, like planning your murder. I would like the record to show that I no longer wish to see you any further, I find that the sessions no longer help me. I prefer to keep my sanity intact if that's okay with you." I raised my voice at the doctor, my anger threatening to boil over and cause a scene.

"If that is what you wish for, then that is what shall happen. I will make no further appointments with you. I will cancel next week's scheduled one. I shall also inform the other doctors that you are no longer seeing me, that you were of sound body and mind. I'm sure he'll understand. But if you ever feel the need to contact me, just ask the guard to bring you here, I'll be more than happy to see you." He said, not looking up from his notepad.

I pursed my lips and shrugged my shoulders, exiting the room without a "thank you" or a "goodbye" to the doctor. I didn't need him, or anyone that tried to make me feel sane. I didn't want to feel sane. That was for the normals, and normal is rather boring.

I needed to get out of here as quickly as possible. I was afraid they were going to change me, make me more normal. But with a mastermind like Osiris on my side, escape should be a walk in the park.
