[Present tense.] - normal font.
[Flashbacks.] -italics.5 months and 19 days. That's how long it had been since the right side of the bed lost its warmth, since you woke up and saw a mess of brown fluffy hair on the pillow beside you. That's how long it had been since the breakup, and truthfully, you were still adjusting, so much of the apartment still felt bare.
The bookshelves were sparse, and seeing just one toothbrush by the sink in the bathroom was a daily reminder.Being with Spencer, it had been the best five years of your life. You got to spend the wonderful ages of twenty four to twenty nine, and he twenty nine to thirty four. They were important years of your life, special years. But people were right when they said those things didn't last forever.
You made your way from the bedroom to the bathroom, stretching your arms upwards in the air before they fell back down to your sides. You looked up into the mirror, before taking your toothbrush, twirling it in your fingers slightly. You watched as the faucet ran, dazed from the early morning wake up call.
The cold water rushed down and you placed your fingertips beneath it for a moment to wake you.Then, you started to brush your teeth, closing your eyes briefly and letting your thoughts take over.
Flashback;
Looking beside you, you saw Spencer with a toothbrush in his hand and toothpaste by the corners of his lips. His grey shirt hung loosely from his slim frame, but the muscles in his arms were defined as he brushed his teeth. His black boxers rested at his hips, his brown hair tousled and eyes slightly droopy with tiredness. This is what your 5.a.m looked like.Not anymore.
You opened your eyes again, placing your toothbrush down and looking to the empty spot beside you. Your 5.a.m didn't look like that anymore. Your 5.a.m's were quieter, the only footsteps you heard were your own.
With a soft sigh, you made your way back to the bedroom.You had to start the day, whether you wanted to or not. You had work to get to, friends to keep up with. If there was one thing that you refused to let yourself do, it was to wallow in self pity and shut out the world around you.
The world doesn't stop turning after a breakup.
You started with coffee. Coffee had to be the kickstarter to every day. Thankfully, there was a nearby coffee shop by your apartment complex. And in all honesty, it was probably one of the selling points when you and Spencer moved into the place. You remembered that day with just a blink of your eyes.
Flashback;
"You know if you don't like it, there are hundreds of other apartments we could look at. In fact, in this area alone, there are approximately-" Spencer rushed his words, rambling like he always did, but you silenced him by pressing your lips against his for a moment before you pulled away."Spencer, I love it here. Look, it has bookshelves all over the walls, that's perfect for you. The fireplace, the little bathroom. Everything about this place is perfect for us Spencer. I want this to be where we live. This little spot is where we exist." You told him.
"Plus, there is a coffee shop right around the corner." Spencer responded, resulting in your laughter echoing through the empty apartment, and with the sound of just your joy, he started laughing too.
