The air was frigid and the sky was the same shade of piercing black as it had always seemed to be.
Of course, just floating around in space didn't bring as much variety in setting as one might expect.
Day and night felt blurred on the ship. When traveling to different parts of the galaxy, time stopped being of concern.
That is unless you were being followed by a psychopathic fleet of Galra ships. As of lately though, things had been quiet.
Not quiet as in the Galra were planning their next attack, more along the lines of them trying to get their shit together.
For the first time in months, the Blade and Voltron were gaining exceptional leverage in this seemingly endless war.
So Keith should be happy, he was effectively knocking out his missions with very little error. Things were going so well that he got sent back to the castle.
The Blade needed time to organize their plans for the upcoming weeks so Kolivan insisted on Keith going back to Voltron temporarily.
During his stay, he'd need to update the paladins on their progress. It was far too risky to do this over communication devices with the chance of having an unwanted signal interfere.
Keith had already told all he was permitted to tell to his team and still had a few days until Kolivan wanted him back for his next mission.
This gave Keith some free time to see his friends again. Great right?
Well actually, no.
From the moment he stepped back into the castle Lance had been flat-out rude.
The way he was treating Keith seemed more than just a 'rivil' thing.
Even when Lance saw Keith as the rival he always made him out to be, he was never this snippy.
It was the small things.
When Keith returned after months of separation from his friends he never received any warm welcomes from Lance. At meals, Lance would poke at the smallest things like how he held his fork or something stupid like that.
As they walked the hallways alone, Lance made it a point to 'accidentally' bump Keith as they passed one another.
Working with the Blades brought Keith a new sense of patience. Sure he was always gonna have that snarky side to him but as far as pity fights were concerned, Keith did his best to be mature.
He had to, if he hadn't worked on his temper he knew was gonna get himself killed.
Keith only realized how much he underestimated his temper control once he was back in the castle. He forgot how easily Lance was able to irritate him with just a few looks or comments, more so than anyone else he had ever met.
So there Keith was, for the third night in a row, sneaking out of his room to the lions.
He refused to use the hanger to slide down because that might have made too much noise.
With the press of a button, Keith's door silently slid open. Down the hallway, he'd walked so many times before, he found the dining area.
From the kitchen, through a massive corridor, he went down a few more hallways until he reached the bay where Allura kept the lions.
Maybe it was the small flashlight Keith was using, but the castle felt so much bigger than he remembered it.
Keeping the echo of his steps low, Keith found his- well technically Lance's lion.
Keith couldn't help but smile as if he were seeing an old friend. As much as the boy admired the black lion and its glory, the Red lion held a special place in his heart that he would never just toss away.
Shivering softly, Keith plopped down on the hard metal ground next to Red's paw. It was always colder in lion storage than inside the actual castle, unfortunately, Keith's thin jacket wasn't keeping him all that warm.
Through a tired sigh, Keith began whispering to Red as he usually did when he got a chance to be alone.
"Hey girl, I'm sorry to bother you I just needed to talk before I start breaking stuff again."
Purring, the huge robotic lion vibrated the ground in acknowledgment. Even with a new paladin, the Red lion still had a strong spiritual connection with Keith.
"I know Lance is close with you now... do you happen to know why he's pissed off all the time?" Keith mumbled, pulling a gloved hand through his hair. He waited for a moment but Red gave no response.
"I get it, I've been asking you since I arrived. Can you at least talk to him or something?"
There was no physical response but Keith could feel the Lion considering. After a few minutes, Keith couldn't feel anything anymore.
Compared to the last two nights, Red wasn't responding as much as she usually did.
Sleepy and cold, Keith got up and brushed off his pants. Running a gentle touch over Red like he was petting a house cat, Keith took one last look at Red before turning around.
While walking to the bay's entry, a quick flash of light cut through the darkness.
"What's wrong girl?" Keith questioned, looking back and being met with the lively flickering of the red lion's eyes.
The flickering paused before the eyes became a consistent brightness. Keith's chest tightened as the robot jumped at him, nearly knocking him over.
"What the hell!? Calm down!" Keith scolded.
Eyes brighter than before, the lion swung back in Keith's direction. Jaw unhinged, Red pounced at Keith once more, scooping him up into the control room.
From an outside point of view, it almost looked like Keith was being eaten by a moody cat.
Jumpy from the scare, Keith clutched onto the pilot's seat to catch his breath. Aside from a few bruises, he was unharmed.
Getting up, Keith tried to leave but Red refused to open her jaw. Annoyed, Keith asked nicely for Red to let him out, when that didn't work he tried forcing the lion's mouth open.
"Come on, be a good Kitty and let me out! " Keith yelled, frustrated.
Keith began to knock against the walls and pry himself between the lion's teeth but the gap was too small for even his foot to get through.
Once again, Keith got knocked over and hit the floor.
Keith crossed his arms and stared at the ceiling, "Dumb cat..."
As Keith got up to start hitting the stupid red lion the held him captive, the control panel got his attention.
Flopping back in the piolet's seat, Keith was quick to call through the castle's communication. Less than a second later, Red blocked the call and shut off the panel completely.
"You gotta be kidding me-"

Hello there! I hope you're enjoying the story so far. I'm not great at writing Voltron stories so please forgive me if this is bad. I got to season 6 and stopped because I'm a baby, I recently started rewatching it.I'm not sure when exactly this story is being placed, just know that at this time Keith is with the Blade of Marmora, Lance is now the paladin of the red lion, Allura has blue, and Shiro is back with the black lion.
I'll try to get the rest of the story out as soon as possible since it's spring break right now.
So uhhh in the meantime, comment which paladin of Voltron you're most like.
(I might have to say Hunk. I hate seeing people fight and I love food. Also, I kinda simp for Shay >_<)
