Chapter 11

I sit on the uncomfortable chair as I hold Jaymie's hand. Her parents have just been taken away, back to jail.

"So are your parents allowed to know about Kari while in jail?" I ask.

"I don't know, I don't think so." She replies, staring at the floor.

I give her her space as I sit quietly, trying to think of a way to comfort her.

'Tayla, what time are you going to be home from Jaymie's?' Mom asks.

'Mom, mama. I'm at the hospital, I'm okay but Jaymie's little sister; Kari is in there, I'm not sure how long I will be but I think she will be really ill.' I reply.

'What happened? Is everyone okay?' Mama asks.

'We're okay, physically. Jaymie's parents left cocaine out in the house and Kari ate some, her parents are being taken to jail but I'm not sure what will happen to Kari.' I explain.

''We're on our way.' Mom says.

"Jaymie, if it's okay, my parents will be on their way, just like an adult around."

"Okay, how do you know if they are coming?" She asks.

"I texted them when you was talking to Luke." I reason, lying.

"Oh, okay." She mumbles.

Her eyes begin to tear up, I pull her onto my lap and she wraps her arms around me, placing her head on my shoulder.

"It will be okay, Kari is a strong girl." I try to calm her down.

"Sh-sh-she is only s-six, she shouldn't be-be going through this." She stutters out.

"I know she shouldn't." I say, unsure.

"It's my fault, i-if I was the-there I could have p-prevented it."

"No, it's not your fault Jaymie, think of it this way, you may have been able to prevent it but what about when you aren't at home and she was there with your parents? She could have done this in the future but now that your parents out of the picture when she gets better she won't have to worry about this again." I say.

"My parents out of the picture... That means I will have to move back in with my aunt and uncle." She sobs.

I freeze, thinking about it. She will be moving away, away from me.

I whimper a little at the thought of being away from my mate. Jaymie looks up at me a little confused but before she can say anyting my mom speaks.

"Tayla, we're here." She announces.

I nod my head and note their wrinkled clothes and already know that they ran.

Jaymie shyly smiles at my parents and blushes, getting off my lap. Mama smirks at this but only sits down.

"Jaymie, I'm sorry for what happened to your sister." My mom says.

Jaymie nods her head before looking down and biting her lip.

I look to my right and see Erick hugging Luke as Luke cries into his arms.

After another 20 minutes a doctor walks out and calls for the family of Kari Black.
