She's been chasing an answer, a sign lost in the abyss

On the endless journey from her high school to her home, Chloe's mind turns in sync with her tires. She ponders the possible explanations as to what she just saw, praying to the God that she lost faith in years ago that there was some type of mistake.

She prays that this is all a vivid hallucination caused by the LSD she took last night or that maybe Josh has an identical twin that she didn't know about and that's who the boy on the car was.

But deep down inside the abyss that is her heart, she knows that what she saw was real. It was no dream, no mistaken identity, no high. It was just a cruel, unmistakable, unimaginable truth.
The answer to one question that circles through her mind cannot be discovered by her, however.

"Why Maddie Ziegler?" Why did he choose to move on to the girl that tried to break Chloe, and succeeded in her mission? No matter what girl it had been on the hood of his car or at his lunch table, it would've hurt Chloe. But it's Maddie Ziegler.

The girl who made it her goal in life all senior year to torture Chloe. The girl who bullied Chloe into cutting, anorexic, and now addiction. If it had been a sweet girl like Kendall Vertes or Kalani Hilliker, it wouldn't have had such an impact on her.

Was that his goal? Was he intentionally trying to hurt Chloe as much as he could? That is the only logical answer. That is the only explanation as to why he would choose Maddie over any girl in school.

Chloe concluded that she had hurt Josh when she kissed Cody, and now he was hurting her by being with the one person that she hated.
