It's been a few days after the whole detention thing. Cory and I text but since she's always either ditching or spending time in detention, I don't get to actually talk to her often.
But she's still a very nice person, despite all the rumors. Some people hear a bad rumor and assume it's all they are. It's a pretty shitty thing to do in my opinion.
Anyway, it's currently lunch hour and I'm sitting in my spot at the back corner of the cafeteria, alone. Yes, alone. Cory goes off campus for lunch and I haven't made any other friends. Acquaintences sure but they only talk to me whenever we're in class.
"Hey Lane." Someone said next to me. I turned to look and I saw a red haired girl. She was cute and smiling.
"Hey Cory. Thought you go off campus for lunch?" I said taking a bite out of my lunch.
"I usually do but I thought, maybe I wanna hang out with my favorite new kid?" Her smile grew and she leaned over to take a look at my lunch. As she did so I caught a bit of the cologne she was wearing.
"What you packed sushi for lunch!? Gimme some!" She went to grab at it but I caught her hand with my left hand.
"Hey! We've known each other for almost a week now and you haven't invited me to go with you to get lunch. No sushi for you." I glared at her and poked her stomach. She glared back at me and turned away, crossing her arms and acting like a toddler.
"Hmph. Now I will never invite you with me." Cory hissed. I giggled a little and she seemed to relax a bit.
After a bit of silence I decided to try and strike up a conversation. "You smell nice, by the way." I didn't look at her or anything I just simply said so and kept eating my sushi.
"Oh yeah? You like it?" She gripped the collars of her uniform and shook them in my direction. "It's my dad's. I never liked perfume. The stuff my dad buys seems more mellow to me. It's not too strong or too soft." I nooded my head silently in agreement.
After another few silent moments, Cory decided to speak this time. "So how do you like the city?"
"It's nice I guess. There are a lot of places to go around here. Movie theaters, the mall, restaurants. It's all pretty good." I noticed that she keeps eyeballing my food. "Hey, open your mouth." I said nonchalantly. I turned to see her reaction with a smirk on my face. She looked a bit confused so I gave her a nod of encouragement.
After some visible hesitation, she opened her mouth. I turned back to my sushi and grabbed a piece with my chopsticks, and put it gently on her tongue. I smiled and I saw that she started to blush a very bright red.
She closed her mouth and started chewing. I turned back to my food and ate a peice myself. "Good?"
She nodded and hummed, "Mhmm. Mmm so good."
"Thank my mom. She made it."
"So I heard the teacher you yelled at actually got suspended for the rest of the semester. Did you guys get a sub or something?"
"Yeah I think they're looking for a new one. For now though it's just teachers that come in during their free periods and give their own lecture or play a movie. It's pretty chill I guess." I shrugged.
"Have you heard any rumors about yourself?" I nodded.
"Yeah but nothing too bad. Just things like 'hey did you hear the transfer student tried to hit on the girl she protected' or 'i bet she has a crush on that girl'."
"Well do you?" I turned to Cory with a baffled look on my face.
"No! What hell Cory!"
"Sorry I was just asking." She held her hands up like she was surrendering or something. She quickly put her hands down."D-Do you...do you even swing that way?" She mumbled just loudly enough for me to hear it. I sighed.
"My international school had dorms for the students there. It was a requirement we stayed there even if our houses were near. One day, I told my best friend that I thought I liked girls. He didn't take it well, considering he was religious. He told the school administration and since his parents had financial influence over the school, they forced me to move out of the dorms and just commute." I ate my last piece of sushi and put my stuff away.
"Wow. Fuck that guy for being a dick." I nodded and turned to her.
"Do you?" I asked her. She looked down and nodded slowly. "You seem ashamed of it." She looked up at me a little shocked.
"God no! Just uh...bad memories is all." I reached out and rubbed her arm a little bit to try and comfort her.
"Oh sorry. I won't pry then." I said. There it was again. The awkward silence between us.
"Hey- Oh sorry you go first." We both said at the same time. We both smiled and laughed.
"You go." Cory said and gestured for me to speak.
I sniled and said, "I was gonna say, if you want I can ask my mom to pack extra of whatever she's making me tomorrow."
"Oh wait really!? I was gonna ask if you wanna come with me to get lunch from the place I usually go to but yeah that's cool too." She smiled widely.
"No it's ok. I'll go with you. I wanna spend more time with you, you know, when it's not loud as shit in here." And with that, the bell rang and the other students started to throw away their garbage and head to their next class. Cory and I got up as well and we exited the cafeteria.
"Um, ok. I guess I'll text you where to meet up tomorrow." She said while smiling again. I noticed she smiles a lot whenever she's around me. The few times I see her in the halls she's always got an indifferent look on her face. But when she smiles she has these cute dimples and even her eyes seem to be smiling too.
"Sounds good Cory. I'll text you later. Maybe even during class if it's boring enough." I gave her a light punch on her shoulder as I left for my class.
As I walk away I could feel her smile and green eyes on my back.
