The change from night to the morning was a blur for Felix. He failed to get even a wink of sleep. The remaining hours of darkness passed without affecting his sense of time. Only when the sunlight poured through his curtains did he realize that it was time to get up and face the day.
It was almost cruel how he had to pretend like everything was okay. The thought of leaving Brownie refused to leave his mind. Especially the moment he realized that he was certainly not capable of taking care of such a big dog. He already had financial problems, barely managing to get meals three times a day. How could he even promise to take care of another life?
He dragged himself out of his bed and stared at his messy blankets. Something about his messy room made him anxious. He rubbed his palms against his eyes and pulled at his rough hair. With a frustrated sigh, he came out of his room and stumbled towards the bathroom. Hyunjin came out through the doors just as he was about to knock. The taller boy flashed him a sad smile while patting on his shoulder before leaving him to freshen up.
Felix entered the bathroom and faced himself through his reflection. A tired boy with purplish bags under his eyes stared back at him. He flinched at himself, so miserable and weak. Always incapable of taking care of things. Always disappointing. His inner struggles started surfacing the longer he stared at himself. At that moment he realized that Brownie acted as the biggest distraction from his own thoughts. Maybe that is the reason why he is so attached to that creature.
It does sound selfish but a little break from his dark thoughts was all that he wanted. Felix clenched his jaw and tore his eyes away from his reflection. He got under the shower without bothering for any hot water. The cold water burned his skin and he welcomed the sting. His breath came out in small shivers as he stood under the water motionless.
After trying hard to calm himself he stepped out and got dressed for the day.
He never bothered with styling himself. He simply put on a black hoodie and some jeans. He then grabbed a thicker coat for the cold weather and glanced at his watch. Twenty minutes till classes started. He had enough time to grab breakfast. Only, he didn't have any breakfast. His groceries had ceased to exist just a day ago and he didn't have any money to buy more. He had to choose between food and his bus ticket and the choice was quite obvious.
He came out of his room and locked the door behind him. The corridors were still quiet. He met Hyunjin halfway through his walk towards the elevator. They exchanged half-hearted 'Good mornings', refusing to talk any longer.
Felix felt a suppressed anger trying to resurface inside him. He didn't want to take it out on the wrong person, especially not on Hyunjin because he knew that even he was sad because of what had happened to Brownie, even if he refuses to admit it.
They started walking towards the main gate in silence. Felix eyes were fixed on snow-filled path. It was indeed very cold. Hyunjin made tiny noises to express his discomfort due to immense cold.
It was snowing outside. He regretted not wearing a muffler. He pulled his coat closer to himself trying to block out the cold. The day had just started and he already wanted it to just end. He just wanted to go back to the vet and stay beside Brownie.
Felix was suddenly stopped by Hyunjin who had grabbed his shoulder. Felix flashed him a questioning look. Instead of answering him, Hyunjin lifted a shaky finger towards a certain guard who was sitting by the gate, sipping on his coffee. Felix followed his finger and rolled his eyes when he noticed Mr. Jung. He didn't have enough mental stability to deal with his unhealthy obsession with Hyunjin.
So, he did what he thought was the fastest solution.
He intertwined his fingers with Hyunjin and started pulling him towards Mr. Jung. Hyunjin was shocked but didn't protest. Just as he thought, Mr. Jung stopped them.
