"We can be surgeons!" 15 year old Reed Adamson exclaimed, running into her shared bedroom where Charlotte sat reading The Great Gatsby.
"Surgeons?" Charlotte questioned, setting her book aside and looking at her sister with a raised brow.
"Y'know, like chopping into people, saving their lives! We can be great!"
Charlotte laughed slightly, amused at her sister's big plans for the future. She knew Reed would never survive medical school without her. The red head was anything but responsible and studious, and that was a great asset of Charlotte.
"Okay," she agreed, "Let's do it."
From that day on, Charlotte never picked up another fictional novel. Instead, she read medical journals and science textbooks. She did anything and everything to build her medical knowledge and grow to be a great surgeon, just like her sister. Charlotte never saw herself doing anything without her older sister.
"Dr. Adamson, I was very impressed with your extensive resume and recommendation letters. I noticed going through your file that you were offered the internship here at Seattle Grace," Chief of Surgery, Richard Webber spoke to Charlotte slowly, keeping an eye on the young girl as she sat in his bland office. The girl was sure she was being fired because of what she said to Larry Jennings the night prior.
"Y-yes sir. I couldn't accept it, though. I had to stay with my sister."
"You can't let others dictate your career. That's what got you here," Webber told her.
Charlotte sucked in a sharp breath, her nerves making her legs shake as she sat in the chair. She was certain her career would be over at this moment, and it was quite hysterical to her. She was an introvert that rarely spoke unless she was comfortable around the person or it was completely necessary, yet it was her mouth that was getting her in trouble.
Fuck my savior complex, Charlotte thought, blinking back tears. Charlotte was protective of her friends. Even if they didn't care about her, she would stand up for them to the end. She always wanted to help people; if she wasn't helping, she was failing as a person. Charlotte always thought her purpose in life was to help others, not to be successful for herself. But now, as Charlotte stood before Richard Webber for standing up for her new friend, she was beginning to regret it.
"Callie Torres speaks wonders of you. She told me you're going far. She wants you on her service, but I'm sure you'd be an asset anywhere."
"I think I'm leaning towards pediatrics," Charlotte told him, forcing a smile.
Webber nodded and sat back in his chair. "The board runs this hospital, Dr. Adamson. If they don't like you, your talent means nothing. I fought for you this time, but I'm not sure I can do that again. Tread carefully or you'll end up like Kenner."
