Yachi bounced on the balls of her feet, rocking back and forth in anticipation, butterflies crowding her stomach.
'WHAM!'
She let out a yelp and jumped as a ball slammed into the wall next to her, her spirit visibly leaving her body.
"Yachi are you okay?" Hinata's voice rang out from across the court, a petrified Asahi hanging behind him.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean for it to do that - I swear! You didn't get hit right?" The terrified 3rd year questioned.
The shaking blonde looked up with a panicked look on her face before bowing repeatedly.
"I'm fine! It's- It's my fault anyways I, uh, wasn't paying attention! Please forgive me!"
The boys simply called that it was okay and she just needed to be more careful, before practice resumed. Yachi shook her head and lightly slapped herself on the cheeks.
'Come on Hitoka! Focus!'
It wasn't her fault though, at least she didn't think it was. She couldn't help but be nervous for later.
See, Yachi wasn't exactly the most social person you would ever meet, heck, she had a hard time even talking to the team. So going out for ice-cream with a classmate she just became friends with was absolutely, positively nerve racking.
She let out a sigh before going to fill up the water bottles, grabbing the cart. She made her way outside to the water bottle station and began to fill them up, one by one.
'Oh gosh what am I going to do? What if I say something weird and she doesn't like me anymore? What if they run out of ice cream? What if-'
"Um, hey, you okay?"
Yachi jumped once again, the water bottle she was holding flying out of her grasp.
It was as if time repeated itself, as the water bottle flew up into the air, spilling, and causing a mess. Luckily it only got on Yachi a bit, to her relief.
"Oh, uh sorry, I don't know why this keeps happening haha."
To Yachi's horror she looked up to meet Yamaguchi, who stood there in return, a shy smile dotting his face, and his entire being soaked. Her face immediately lit up pink and she scavenged for a towel from the cart.
"Ohmygoshimsosorryididntrealizesomeonewasbehindmeandi-" She spoke with her words slurred as she rushed to apologize. Using the towel she hurriedly dabbed at his shirt trying to wipe up the water she had spilt.
She traveled to his face ad wiped at it, tears threating to spill. Her face was a bright red and she swore to the heavens that she could not be any more embarrassed then she was now. Once was bad enough, but twice? With the same person?
Just her luck.
She breathed hard, her anxiety making her hands shake and vision blur. Not only did she make a mess but she also got Yamaguchi all wet, someone she was especially nervous around, though she didn't quite know why. She stood on her tiptoe's a struggled to reach his hair, just barley reaching his forehead.
Gently, soft hands grabbed hers and pulled them down. She stared at the ground, the tears still on the brink of spilling over.
"I-I I'm so sorry Yamaguchi, I-I really didn't m-mean to..."
He continued to hold her shaking hands before responding.
"It's ok I shouldn't have snuck up on you like that... I'm sorry Yachi I really am! You don't need to apologize."
She shook her head. "I shouldn't have responded like that I-"
She let out a strained laugh, tears spilling down her face. Why was she being like this? She knew her emotions got the best of her sometimes, but it was never this bad. "Gosh I'm really a mess right now aren't I? Sorry for being such an inconvenience and-"
Her words were cut off as trembling arms awkwardly brought her in for a hug. Her heart beat loud as she stared at his shirt only millimeters away, as his arms wrapped around her shoulders.
He took a gulp and a deep breath before shakily speaking.
"Um, you're uh, you're not an inconvenience Yachi. And you're not a mess you're just uh embarrassed and that's ok, no one's blaming you. There's no need to cry everything's ok."
Yachi sucked her breath in as she tried to calm down, his words resonating in her ears.
'everything's ok'
Shakily, she untucked her arms and wrapped them around his waist, burying her head into his chest, now taking deep breaths.
'everything's ok'
The two stayed like that for a while, tears staining Yamaguchi's tee as Yachi calmed down, her anxiety starting to fade and be replaced with a sense of calm.
"Hey Yachi everything ok?"
Kiyoko's voice in the distance caused the two to jump apart.
"U-Uh yeah! I'll be back in a minute!"
Glancing at the ground Yachi looked up to meet Yamaguchi's gaze, her eyes red rimmed and face blotchy.
"...Thankyou."
He patted her head with one hand and gave her a grin, one of the brightest she's ever seen. He seemed nervous, his face a shade she had never seen before. A warm feeling in her chest.
"I-I'm just happy I could make you feel better...!"
She let out a laugh, one more relaxed. She gave him a shaky grin.
"Thank you."
With exchanged glances and smiles the two finished filling up the water bottles and headed back to the gym.
...
With a single glance anyone could see it, as clear as day, that they weren't quite friends anymore, that things had ever so slightly changed.
That there was something more.
