"Nice block!"

"Right side!"

"Watch out! It's ok we'll get it back next time!"

Yachi sat studiously to the sidelines of the court scribbling notes onto a sheet of paper, her gaze flickering between the players on the court. Karasuno was in the middle of it's 3rd set against the Sirens, Whitewater High.

The manager couldn't help but look on in excitement and wonder as the two teams faced off in a practice match. Even though it wasn't a real game both teams gave off competitive static that filled the air.

"Bring it here!"

Yachi whipped her gaze from a player on Whitewater's team (a tall lanky boy with wispy brown hair who she noted to be a good blocker) to Kageyama and Hinata as the pair set up for a spike.

She held her breath as she watched the pair wind up in anticipation, the ball gently touching Kageyama's fingertips as he sent it towards Hinata, the short middle blocker already in the air. In the blink of an eye the ball was already on the other side of the court, smashing into the ground before bouncing off somewhere.

She felt herself smile and let out a cheer with the rest of the team, watching as the score keepers flipped another point for Karasuno, bringing it 12 to 10.

She couldn't help but feel a warmth in her chest as she looked on at her team, a small sense of pride lighting up in her chest. Even with it being a practice game the boys were giving their all, all in hopes of getting better for the real thing.

Yachi gripped her pen, careful not to scrunch the paper beneath. In her mind her mother's and Kiyoko's words rung with a clear tone.

"Whatever. Just remember, if you're going to join a group of passionate people, the rudest thing you can do is give a half hearted effort."

"Nobody needs an unwavering desire or a grand incentive to give something a try. Even when you start something on a whim, over time it can grow into something very important to you."

Even though some of the words still stung it helped her stand strong. She drew her attention back to the court and watched the silhouettes of her team flying through the air and defending on the ground. She hadn't been with them long but she had already been witness to the warmth and family feeling that enveloped the team and eventually herself.

Her grip relaxed slowly, the small smile returning. She wanted volleyball and this team to become that very important thing Kiyoko talked about.

"Watch out!"

Yachi jumped as a ball slammed into the ground and rolled a few feet away from her. Leaning over and grabbing the ball she sheepishly looked up and handed it to Daichi who gave her a look of apology before rushing back onto the court.

Her eyes followed him as the captain tossed it to Yamaguchi, who was prepping for a serve.

'Something important to me...'

...

'BAM!'

The ball slammed onto Whitewater's side one last time, ending the practice game in Karasuno's favor. Yachi gave a small cheer before standing up and rushing to get the boys coming off the court water.

She grimaced just slightly as the boys approached her and the water bottles, the stench of hard work and sweat rolling off of them. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed the manager of Whitewater's team doing the same.

She hadn't noticed the tall girl before, and Yachi stared at her in curiosity. She gave off a mature feeling similar to Kiyoko, even from afar. She had a cheery smile on her face as she greeted her team with high fives and fist bumps along with words of encouragement.

Yachi couldn't help but feel slightly giddy on the inside. Even though she had a long, long, long way to go she couldn't wait till she was like Kiyoko and Whitewater's manager. She supposed that she admired their maturity in some sense.

"Hito- Yachi, could I-?"

Yachi jumped and looked to see Yamaguchi staring at her, hand slightly raised. Her mind went blank and fizzled as she failed to comprehend what he just said. She blinked and stared at his hand in confusion. She wanted to slap past her for not paying attention. What did he want? She glanced back up at him panickily and he returned it with a confused stare.

Her mind clicked as she remembered what the other team's manager was doing. Slowly she extended her own hand and gave him a slightly pathetic high five, mustering up her best smile.

"You were great! You're serves were awesome too!"

"..."

The two stood there in silence as Yachi anxiously waited for his response, fiddling with her shirt as she looked at him.

"Pfffffft."

'......Huh?'

Yachi cocked her head to the side in confusion as she watched Yamaguchi break out into a small fit of laughter which he tried to hide behind his hands. He was unsuccessful as he let out giggle like laugh and smiled at her, very much aware of her confusion.

"Yama...guchi?"

He quickly waved his hands to signal everything was okay before giving her another grin, his freckled cheeks slightly pink.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to laugh...I uh," He struggled to contain another small snort of laughter, "I just couldn't help it, I asked for some water and...."

Yachi stood there listlessly, the words slowly sinking before she quickly covered her mouth with her hands in embarrassment.

"OhmygoshI'msosorryIwasn'tpayingattentionandthatwassoembarressingI'msosorryhere'syourwater-"

She quickly grabbed a water bottle and handed it to him, face bright red, before hiding her face behind her hands. Yamaguchi looked at her with a sweet smile, careful to contain his laughter, to which he carefully lowered her hands.

She looked at him flushed, glancing down at her hands which rested in his for a split second before resting her gaze on the ground and fiddling with her fingers.

"I'm sorry."

He looked at her, voice soft and humorous. A smidge of courage dusted his cheeks and he let out a small laugh.

"It's my bad, no need to apologize..."

He glanced at the ground then back at her and continued in a small quiet voice, almost a whisper.

"You're pretty great too."

He rubbed the back of his neck nervously as he tried to keep composure, face flushed.

"Uhm, I uh, got to go. Looks like Daichi need me. Thanks for the water...high five too."

He gave her a grin before turning around and heading off to the rest of the team, his ears pink.

"..."

Yachi stood there, butterflies rising in her stomach as her face heated up in confusion.

"What?"
