Yachi stole glances at the tall boy next to her as they walked down the street, fiddling with the blue and yellow volleyball in her hands. Her fingers felt like they were on fire despite the good weather they were in, a few clouds spread sparse across the sky.
She supposed that it had to do with the cute middle blocker next to her. She flushed at the thought but smiled slightly to herself, trying hard to keep her excitement of hanging out with him to herself.
"Oh we're here!"
Yachi switched her gaze from Yamaguchi to the sand court in front of them, letting out a sigh of relief as it was empty. She turned to the hazel eyed boy and gave him a nervous grin.
"I'm not the best at volleyball but, um, I'll try my hardest!"
Yamaguchi gave her an encouraging smile back, setting himself across from her, shoes off in receiving position.
"Let's go then!"
Yachi kicked off her own shoes, her toes sinking into the soft warm sand. She bit her lip in concentration and tossed the ball towards Yamaguchi, tracing it as it went through the air. He received it easily sending it back to the girl, Yachi standing stiffly with her arms out.
'I got this-!'
She closed her eyes as it got closer and turned her head, hoping for the ball to hit her outstretched hands. She waited for a few seconds as silence hung in the air. It was only after a few moments she opened the corner of her eye to see the ball on the ground next to her.
'I....missed it?'
She stood and looked at it for a while before the sound of laughter brought her back to reality. The light sound caught her attention, her gaze becoming stuck on the boy in front of her, almost doubled over as he laughed.
Her eyes flickered between his smile and face, scouring every inch of it as he laughed with joy. The sunlight caught his hair making it glow an almost deep emerald green, his hazel eyes flashing with delight at her attempt.
It was only a few moments before the blonde began to laugh as well, flashing a smile as she realized just how badly she had missed, the ball nowhere near her outstretched arms. She quickly picked it up and turned towards the boy, an embarrassed smile on her face.
"Sorry!"
...
"You got this one Yachi!"
Yachi crouched down into a receiving stance once again and kept her eye on the ball, arms extended as it came hurtling towards her. Well, really it was a light toss but at this point she couldn't tell the difference.
'Thud'
Yachi watched as the ball soared up through the air again towards Yamaguchi this time, her wrists stinging. She looked excitedly over at the middle blocker, a grin on her face.
"I...I did it!"
He gave her a grin back before receiving the ball, sending it back her way. They had been at it for a while now, Yamaguchi trying his best to help Yachi receive the ball, step by step. It had taken them a solid 10 minutes to get her to not close her eyes, which in Yachi's defense, had been argued that the volleyball was terrifying enough when it was coming at you.
Yachi raised a hand to shade her eyes from the sun as the ball came back down, squinting at the approaching blue and yellow blur. She stretched out her arms once again aiming for the ball. She let out a laugh of delight as it went up into the air, proud of the fact that she had received it twice in a row.
The sun was setting at this point in the day, time having flown past the two. Yachi noted with a hint of satisfaction the faded pinks and oranges that covered the sky, the backdrop to a sunset. She snapped out of her thoughts as a hand tapped her on the shoulder, turning her head to see Yamaguchi with the volleyball.
"You okay?"
She quirked her head in confusion before realizing she had been daydreaming. She panicked, feeling that she had been rude and bowed slightly in apology.
"Sorry! I was just looking at the sunset and I thought it was really pretty and sunsets are really cool and I wasn't trying to ignore you or anything I just got distracted by the sky and it reminds me of y-"
Yachi cut herself off embarrassed by her rambling, scared that the rest of the words would fall out of her mouth and expose her, showing her feelings.
"Uh-! Sorry! I didn't mean to ramble..."
She lowered her head just slightly and peered back up at the hazel eyed boy, surprised by the gentle smile that graced his face. He scratched behind his ear just slightly before pointing a thumb behind him.
"Can I- uh- do you want to see something cool?"
Yachi raised her eyebrows and slightly stared at him. Yamaguchi hesitated before slowly grabbing her hand and pulling her behind him as he started walking.
She stared at his back bewildered as he led her somewhere, unsure of what was going on. Her gaze flickered back to his hand clasped around hers, firm as he guided her down a stone path near the court.
The feeling of nervousness pitted in her stomach before being replaced by an immense wave of calm. The familiar sense of comfort and warmth washed over her, outweighing the sense of fear and unsurety.
"This is what I wanted to show you."
Yamaguchi's voice cracked as he came to a stop, the two on a small hill by the river. The river wasn't much to look at, rather a stream bound to die out with a few scattered water plants here and there. Rather, Yachi caught herself mesmerized by the view.
The sunset caught the edge of the hill just perfectly, almost violent streaks of pink strewn across the sky as if done by a skilled artist's hand. The setting rays rested upon the petals of the camellia's that blossomed in small bushes along the hill, turning them an array of colors. Yachi turned back towards Yamaguchi with a look of excitement on her face, eager to point out the flowers to him.
She was met with his gaze already on her, rosy lips slightly parted and cheeks pink. He quickly covered his face with his other hand turning his head slightly away from her, his voice muffled.
"One sec- I- sorry."
She kept her gaze on Yamaguchi as the blush spread to his ears and his hand grew warmer. She felt her own face turn slightly pink and turned back towards the sunset, feeling herself grow hotter. The blonde trained her gaze on the setting sun, the words threatening to spill out of her mouth from earlier coming to mind.
'It reminds me of you.'
She felt his grip tighten ever so slightly and pushed down her nerves, turning towards him. He snuck glances at her but mainly kept his gaze on the sunset, his voice warbling in the beginning as he tried not to stutter.
"I uh wanted to show you the sunset since it's really pretty here."
Yachi lightly hummed appreciation as she felt the warm rays wash over her. She held her breath as Yamaguchi continued, voice softer, just barely above a whisper.
"And um thanks for hanging out with me today, it was a lot of fun and... I really needed it."
His grip tightened and loosened once again and Yachi stayed quiet, realizing that silence was the best response. She slowly sank to the ground, pulling the tall middle blocker down with her until they were settled in the grass.
Yachi wasn't sure how long they sat like that, peacefully on the grass, hands intertwined but she didn't mind. She didn't really care how long they sat there just that they were.
Just as long as she was holding his hand.
