When Yachi didn't show up to practice Yamaguchi knew he had messed up.
Majorly.
He had ran off after giving her his jacket, under the excuse of talking to a teacher. His stomach had been in knots the entire time and he couldn't get rid of the gnawing anxiety that threatened to overflow.
So when the girl he liked and the girl he gave his jacket too didn't show up to their practice, it only made him feel worse. As they started to warm up, he fiddled with his shirt and his breathing was shaky. He couldn't help but feel .... bad.
Gosh he couldn't even begin to describe the feeling.
It got to the point that even the 3rd years noticed something was off about the green haired middle blocker. Sugawara being the dependable vice captain he was walked over and patted him on the shoulder.
"Hey, you okay Tadashi?"
The first year nodded fiercely. "Um, yeah! Just, uh, fine!"
Sugawara raised an eyebrow and stared suspiciously.
"Are you sure? Cause-"
He was interrupted by the slamming of the gym's doors and the appearance of a certain blonde, who was hunched over and breathing heavily.
She quickly bowed, her hair a mess. "I'm so sorry for being late!"
Yamaguchi unconsciously let out a relieved sigh. At least she hadn't skipped the entire practice. He watched as she hurriedly apologized to the coaches and Daichi, who all rushed to tell her to calm down and that it was alright.
His thoughts reeled back to when they had first meet, for some odd reason. Maybe it was the way she her hair was slightly a mess or the way her voice sounded, or the fact that she was once again wearing the baby blue star clips. His interest peaked as he noticed his jacket swamping her, her hands pushing up the sleeves every once in a while as they were too big for her.
A grin came to his face and he quickly covered it with his hand, trying to nonchalantly stare at the volleyball in his other hand, his gaze flickering over to her every once in a while. He wanted to hug her so, so badly.
He made a mental reminder to give her his jacket more often, she just looked so cute - he stopped himself. When would he be able to give her his clothes again? His smile faltered for a bit. When would he be able to?
...
When Yachi had entered the gym she seriously didn't expect the door to slam open that loudly. It had made her cringe the way she had instantly become the center of attention. She pushed that feeling down though and rushed to apologize.
She kept her gaze to the ground as she talked to the coaches, urging herself to not look over. To not give herself away. She swore she could feel his gaze on her, burning a hole into her heart. She unconsciously tugged at the jacket's sleeves, before it reminded her of who's it was.
"Hitoka, I'll take you to the locker room so you can change."
Yachi looked up to see Kiyoko giving her a smile, with a meaning she couldn't quite place. She nodded regardless though and quickly headed to the locker room with the third year.
It was quiet as they walked down the hallway, the sound of their foot steps filling the silence.
"Hitoka, if you don't mind me asking, are you alright? I've noticed that you seem to be really shaky during the last few practices..."
Yachi looked up in surprise before smiling and nodding her head.
"Yup! Everything's fine!"
By then they had reached the locker room and Hitoka went to change. Kiyoko leaned against one of the nearby walls and stared at her sneakers. When the blonde came back they quickly headed back, talking about the schedule of practice games coming up.
She decided not to ask about the jacket.
