We've been at Richards house for a few weeks now, long enough to need more supplies. That's the plan for today, go into town and get the things we need to help us live through winter.
"Randy and Marcus are ready, they are just waiting for you June." Richard called through my door. Marcus is my fathers name.
"I'll be down in a minute." I called back, slipping on my shoes.
Alex wrapped me in his arms and hugged me tight, he and I have been spending a lot of time together lately. He even stays in my room occasionally, him being close makes me feel better about life in general.
"I don't want you to go." Alex said in a whiny tone, once again.
"Alex, we talked about this, Ollie needs you. There isn't any point in you coming along if you don't have to."
He sighed, "I don't want anything happening to you."
I leaned up and quickly kissed him, "Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. We should be back before dark, I've lived here my whole life. I know where everything is at in town so we will be in and out no problem."
I let go of Alex and grabbed my things so I could leave. But before I could open the door, Alex swung me around and pushed me against the wall. He lifted my chin up so I was looking up at him, my stomach fluttered like it does every time we kiss and I closed my eyes as his lips met mine. After a moment, he pulled away and smiled at me.
"You come back to me."
I nodded at him, my head still swimming from the intense kiss. I found everyone else outside by the truck and Richard tossed me the keys.
"You better be back before nightfall, looks like it may rain later. You don't want to get caught up in a storm." Richard said before seeing us off.
Randy rode up front with me, and Marcus sat in the back seat. While I drove Randy and I made small talk and I made sure to keep my eyes on the road. I don't even want to glance back at my dad, his presence just annoys me. I hate that he is even here with us, but I would rather him risk his life instead of Richard or Alex.
I pulled the truck up to our town's appliance store, we really need a new hot water heater. Fingers crossed there is one left. I figure when all the looting happened, nobody was trying to steal water heaters.
"Alright, Marcus, you stay here with the truck. Randy and I will go in and clear it, don't fire any damn guns."
I knocked on the door of the store to get the attention of anything inside. I could see the rotter's slowly creeping out of the darkness. Clearing the store didn't take it long, there were just a few of the freaks inside. First thing we grabbed was a water heater, and I was right, they were left behind by the looters. We tied the water heater in the back of the truck then Randy and I went back in to see what else we could find.
We managed to fill two bags of random things, like batteries, and flashlights. I was browsing the CD section when a gunshot made me jump out of my skin.
"Damn it!" I snapped, running out front where we left my dad.
There was one rotter dead and my dad's feet, and he stood there with his gun up.
"One? You wasted a bullet on ONE rotter? You're an idiot! All the freaks in town probably heard that shot. Now we have to leave-"
"Hey, you hear that?" Randy asked, cutting me off.
After a moment, I realized what he was talking about. I could hear a steady buzz of groaning coming towards us. We turned just in time for a large group of them to come out from behind our building. They must have been in the parking lot next door. They all came down on us too fast, so fast we couldn't even get in the truck.
