This and that was going on in my head in the early morning, it was that type of morning where you lie in bed drifting in and out of sleep, awake but still fully emerged in your dream world, the type of morning when your thoughts are nonsense for a good two hours and then when you wake up it's way later than you wanted it to be. It was that type of morning.
Eventually I sat up in bed, and rubbed my eyes, and then I nearly got a heart attack remembering that I had classes that day. My dorm mate, his name was John Laurens and he was from somewhere in the South, but he didn't really talk about it and he spent most of his time at several jobs, God knows why he worked so hard, he was already gone when I got up and went to look for him. I picked up my phone from the kitchen counter, wondering why I had left it there anyway and why the alarm didn't go off, when I realized that that son of a bitch turned off the alarm and that it was nearly noon.
"God fucking dammit!", I yelled, for no particular reason other than because I could, and also because even though I wanted to be mad at John for letting me sleep in, I also found that I appreciated him caring enough to want me getting enough sleep. Since it was already too late to go to my classes, I took it easy and went for a shower. To my surprise, the water was warm, which wasn't a usual occurrence in our shitty college dorms.
For a good while, I just stood in the shower and let the water hit me, steaming up the room within minutes. I didn't care, I didn't pay for water, and this was a maybe once-in-a-month chance. Even with the rushing of the shower, I could still hear the wind outside, and judging by the sound of it I guessed that at least two of the trash cans on campus had already fallen over and spread their contents evenly over the ground. It wasn't the first time, and everyone knew that strong winds meant that kind of unpleasant side effects.
After what was probably fifteen minutes I finally had enough of the standing around, and so I washed off and went through the more or less hastily finished process of washing my hair. So what it wasn't perfect, my standards for hair care aren't that of a drag queen. Do drag queens take good care of their hair? No clue, I've never been one for that kind of stuff, my friend Lafayette is though, I might have to ask him about it. So I got out of the shower and got dressed, since I wasn't heading to class I chose the casual option of a bandana and a T-shirt and jeans. Bandanas weren't allowed on campus at the time, something about gang activity or whatever, but there was a slim chance of getting called out on it, so who cared.
I stuffed my laptop and keys into my bag and my phone and wallet into my pockets before leaving the dorm. Out in the hall, the noise from the wind outside wasn't as loud, but I still shuddered at the idea of going outside in that storm, and considered turning right back around. But before I could make that decision, the door across the hall swung open, and through stepped the one and only Lafayette, wearing a pastel pink cardigan and a strawberry hairpin with his outfit. Oh yeah, he had recently picked up this style, it was really cute and soft and it made everyone stare when the two of us walked down the street together.
"Salut Hercules, what are you up to?", he asked as he locked the door to his dorm. "Eh, I was gonna go into town, I really need to do some shopping or else we'll only have empty shelves in the entire dorm. Laurens, that dick, he turned off my alarm and I completely missed school." Lafayette laughed and shrugged, hooking his arm into mine. "What does it matter, nobody except Alexander ever has perfect attendance", he scoffed. "Come on, let's go together, we can stop by the coffee shop on our way to the store, you can go ahead and chew John out at his workplace, hm?"
Outside, the storm was almost unbearable, and I held on to Lafayette tightly in order to stop him from flying away. Of course, I don't think he would've actually flown away, but you never know... We got to the coffee shop a little slower than usual, and I just barely kept the door from slamming shut and pushing us onto the floor. Inside, it was warm and quiet, the smell of coffee filled my nose and instantly put me in a better mood, fuck that weather anyway. "I'm buying the drinks, you just sit down", I told Lafayette, who happily complied and went to sit down at one of the tables. I went to get in line, and I was honestly surprised to see that my roommate was actually on his shift at this exact moment.
