It was my first day at my new school, and I was pretty nervous, but also excited for the fresh start. After my family had moved down South into one of those big houses with huge property around it, I couldn't be bothered with paying attention to what my father told us about the house, my sisters and I had spent some time trying to figure out the local customs. Southerners are confusing, everyone knows that, but I was surprised just how difficult it was to fit in. All the girls were 'dolled up', and the guys looked like they came straight from a ranch. Come to think of it, most of them probably did. As I was staring at myself in the mirror, I once again wondered what drove my father to move us to rural South Carolina.
I decided to wear my usual attire, if I was gonna shock them I might as well shock them now. A black skirt that went about to my mid thigh, with a belt and a tucked in Panic! At The Disco T-Shirt. I put on heavy eye liner and highlight, imagining the faces of these country folk when they would see it. After pulling my hair in a ponytail I ran downstairs, where my sisters and father were already eating breakfast. My two sisters were the exact opposites of me. Eliza was always very timidly dressed and kind of a soft girl, while Angelica was the definition of professionalism and rich girl looks.
After dinner, our dad drove us to school half an hour away. When we pulled up to the school, I could already tell that my assumptions were right. Though most of the girls didn't look like Dolly Parton, the flavor in their outfits was still non-existent. We got out of the car and grabbed our schoolbags, then walked to the entrance. Many of the students were gawking at the unusual sight, and I couldn't help but smirk and wave at a few open mouths. My sisters were both a class above me, and so I seperated from them to walk to my first class; Geometry. It was at the end of the school, and so I started quickly walking down the hallways, looking around for my classroom door, when suddenly- bam! My schoolbag was ripped out of my hand and the contents went flying down the hall.
I spun around to face the guy holding my now half empty backpack, my face was already turning red from anger. The boy looked greasy, about my age and pimples all over his face. He laughed and waved the backpack in front of me. "Come get it, weirdo!" I was so ready to punch him in the face, but instead I just gave him a good kick in the you-know-whats and snatched the schoolbag out of his hand. Half a second later he was rolling around on the ground, crying. I quickly started picking up my stuff, which a different boy stopped to help me with.
"Sorry bout his behavior", the boy apologized, "he's mad that he has to repeat the grade." I giggled. "Makes sense. Thanks for helping me, by the way." The boy looked up surprised. "You aren't from here, are you? What's your name?" "I'm from New York, and my name is Peggy Schuyler." "Nice to meet you Peggy, I'm John Laurens. If you ever need help getting around school, just come to me, alright? Not like I got anything better to do anyway."
I nodded and picked up the last book. "Alright! Thanks for helping me. Do you know where I can get to my math class? I'm in grade 10c." John smiled. "Oh, we're in the same class. Come along, I'll show you where to go." I followed him down the hallway, surprised that now, everyone was avoiding us with their gaze. "Hey John, why's everyone acting so strange?", I muttered. John sighed. "They're scared my dad's gonna get 'em kicked out if they do anything. He's done it plenty of times before. He has this big ass company, so he can afford to bribe the principal."
"And you're... sad about that?" I could tell by John's expression that he wished his father wasn't the way he is. "I hate it. Not only does not a single soul wanna talk to me, I alsp don't particularly like relying on money from a company that makes its income with child labor." I looked at him confused. "Almost every company does that, there's nothing anyone can do about it." John scoffed. "Looks like you'll fit right in, Peggy Schuyler." He started walking quicker, as if to say 'I want to get this over with'. "John, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that. Please don't be mad!" He shrugged. "Fine." Great, this was gonna be one hell of a time. We got to class and the teacher waved me to the front.
"Please introduce yourself." I nodded and turned to the class. "Uhm... my name is Peggy Schuyler, I'm fifteen years old and I moved here with my family from New York. I have... two older sisters, they're in the grade above me." The teacher nodded. "You can sit next to John, it seems like the two of you already clicked." A collective 'ooooooh!' went through the class as I made my way to the seat, some doing kissing faces. I rolled my eyes. "And one more thing, I'm a lesbian." The class went silent. "Big mistake", John muttered. "What's up with her?", I heard from the back of the class.
I couldn't wait for school to be over.
