It was October 31st, and as any college student knows, that meant a party, and a big one too, with the main goal to start as much drama and as much health concerns as humanly possible.
I was always one of the people who tend to avoid social gatherings, rather curling up in my bed and reading a good book, discussing it with my roommates, if possible. And it would have been possible on any other day, but it was Halloween, and my roommates happened to love chaotic parties with the stench of liquor.
So, my fate was sealed, and I was dragged along.
It seemed fine at first, the location was the house of some of our wealthy classmates, sisters, though I couldn't remember the names. A large home, with hardwood floors and nice furniture, and I shuddered at the thought of beer all over them.
My roommates, Alex and Lafayette, dragged me over to the couch and sat me down, and I quickly realized it wasn't all that intense. The music was loud and the people louder, but nobody was drunk enough to do any damage yet.
When I looked to where my friends had been standing, they weren't to be found, and so I assumed they were already out to find booze.
I leaned back and sighed, looking around the room to scan for anything interesting, because I really didn't know what else to do with myself. Some people were giving weird looks, because of course they were, but I glared back at them shamelessly.
When my friends came back, they weren't holding alcohol, but instead they jerk me up from the couch and pull me towards some stairs. I groaned, not wanting to be introduced to whoever they were leading me to, but I wasn't met with sympathy.
"Laurens, stop being such an introvert. We're part of the VIP, and you're our friend, so you are too."
"What an honor", I deadpanned as Alex pushed open the door at the top of the stairs. Immediately, a bit of smoke blew into our faces, and my mouth nearly fell open.
"Please don't tell me you guys smoke weed up here."
"You don't have to if you don't want to, mon copain", Laf said, grinning, and that told me all I needed to know about wether he would be taking up the offer.
Whatever, it's college. We stepped into the room and I was introduced to the people lounging in the spacious room under the roof.
Thomas, a guy who I knew in bypassing. He was in our grade, but we were different social groups, and so I never bothered to speak to him much. It was the same with the Schuylers, who I now remembered were the hosts, Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy. Then there were Maria and James Madison, people who I hadn't heard of before, but who seemed relatively chill compared to the others.
Though, that might've just been the joints in their hands. All of them had one, I quickly realized.
"Have a seat, dude! Laurens is the name, right?", Peggy said, gesturing for me to sit between Alex and her on the couch.
Laf had already started a not-so-hushed conversation with the Thomas guy, and so I quickly sat down to avoid any awkwardness. Alex subtly pushed a cup into my hand.
"You won't be left empty handed, and I assume you don't want to smoke, so just take it", he chuckled before I could refuse it.
I rolled my eyes and took a sip. Expecting the bitter taste of beer, I was surprised when I realized Alex had found some wine instead. Cheap, probably, not that I could tell the difference, but I appreciated the gesture, beer has and always will be too bitter to seriously enjoy. To get wasted with when you don't have other options, maybe, but to sip on it's always been mediocre to me.
And I wasn't planning on blacking out in-between a bunch of stoners.
"Ey, Laurens, you're roommates with your two idiots, right?", I heard from beside me. Peggy was looking at me, one eyebrow raised.
"Yeah, I am."
"Good, then spill some secrets, Alex is annoyingly hard to get dirt on."
I ducked before I could get in the way of the slap Alex threw across the couch, which Peggy dodged with an offended gasp. I couldn't help but laugh, and Alex bent over to me, just a little too close to my ear.
"Don't tell them anything, or I'm never helping you with your laptop ever again."
I chuckled and nodded, and Peggy let out a groan in disappointment. "Dammit!", she whined, and I nearly choked on my drink with laughter. Maybe it wouldn't be so boring after all.
"Everyone! Thomas et moi made the collective decision of a round of truth or shot!", Lafayette shouted, making me nearly spit out my drink.
It's that fucking chapter. All the fanfictions have it, and now my introverted ass is sitting between a bunch of stoners for a round of truth or dare with alcohol.
So, we sat in a circle on the floor, and Maria brought in a bottle of vodka with plastic shot glasses. We each received a full shot glass and the bottle was set down in the middle, then the game could begin.
"Alright, I'll start. Thomas, truth or dare", Maria asked, leaning backwards against the couch and folding her hands in her lap like a talkshow host.
"Dare."
"I dare you to kiss the hottest person in the room."
Oh, how original, I thought, scanning the group on who I suspected the victim might be. I came to no conclusion, of course, these were the popular kids and all of them were to some degree conventionally attractive.
Thomas eyed the group skeptically. "Hm... the sisters are a pass, I'm not trying to get my nose broken by Angie...", he thought out loud, which earned him a snort from Peggy, and a glare from the elder counterpart in pink. He ignored it, though.
"Laffy Taffy looks so similar to me we might be related, so I'll pass on that too."
Another laugh went through the room. It was true, next to eachother they looked eerily similar.
"Maria's dating Angelica, so that's a given no-go, and..."
His eyes fell on me, and I shook my head. "I'm claiming new guy privileges."
He gasped. "What, am I not worthy of a kiss from you?" I rolled my eyes at him and shook my head. "I'm pretty sure you're in a debate class with Alex, and I don't want to get murdered in my sleep."
"Damn right", I heard next to me.
"Oh my god, get on with it!", Maria groaned, and Thomas shrugged, leaned over to who I assumed he was close friends with, James Madison, giving him a quick kiss on the lips before getting comfortable in his seat again.
There was nothing spectacular about it, but now I had a good insight into friend and relationship dynamics of the group, and I was satisfied with that.
"Laurens, new guy privileges are hereby revoked. Truth or dare?", Thomas said, grinning, and I glared.
"Truth."
"What's the stupidest thing you've done in your life."
I thought for a moment. While I've done a lot of stupid things, I didn't feel like bringing down the mood by talking about my father or mental stuff.
"A friend and I back in highschool stole a shopping cart and drove it straight down the hill into a cop car."
