You tell the truth.

You are extremely guilty about  the events that occurred previously. Leaving your men behind caused you to break the number one rule of a soldier. So, you sat there in front of your commanding officer taking a deep breath in before confessing.

Y/N: "I left my men behind as the fight got to intense, there was no hope so I ran"

The C.O looked at you first in anger, then in sadness. He slowly nodded his head before picking a piece of paper and writing on it.

C.O: "You did a good thing by admitting what you have done, but you understand that there will be huge consequences for your actions... desertion for one."

You remembered what your Drill Sergeant back at training said about desertion. Dishonorable discharge, removal of pay, and prison for 5 years. Sometimes during war... execution. You couldn't bare to even think about never seeing your beloved again.

Y/N: "Please don't kill me. I-I have someone back home and I will face any other consequence, I just want to see her again!"

At this point you were on your knees grabbing at the C.O's legs with your head all the way down to the ground tears streaming down your face. The C.O looked at you with sad eyes, to him you were just a kid forced into a war that no soldier wanted to fight in.

C.O:" Christ L/N, stand up"

You obliged and you told you to sit back down.

C.O: "I understand why you would do such a thing, you are scared, and tired of this. So am I, but that doesn't mean you can just up and leave your men."

He sighed and sifted through the various papers on his desk until her found one, and shoed it to you.

Y/N: "W-What's this?"

C.O: "Mission Orders."

Y/N: "What?"

C.O: "I don't think the courts will be lenient just because you are a kid, you are likely to not make it back home if you face the courts, but... I can change the reports if you do this mission."

You read of the paper slowly making sure not to miss anything. When you were done you realized why he gave it to you. It was a suicide mission, a one way ticket. The objective was to destroy an small enemy communications base deep in foreign lines, the reason for it being so important was that this small base was responsible for Artillery communications, Flight paths, Ground Troop paths, and reinforcements.  It was heavily fortified so, it was a covert mission. You read it once more and sighed. This was your only option, and if it had the slightest chance of getting you home in one piece, you would do it.

Y/N: "I don't have any choice do I?"

C.O: "Unless you want to go home in a body bag, I'm sorry for being so cold but that's just reality. Will you do it?"

Y/N: "If I'm going to die either way... I'd rather that my love knows that I died a hero. If I make it home I'm going to marry her."

C.O: "That's good to hear. I have assembled a team of 5 including you. They are deserters as well. Follow me then, you deploy in an hour."

So, you followed your C.O outside of the command tent and towards 4 people, when you got closer you could tell then all of them were in the same boat as you. Grave faces full of guilt and despair, if it wasn't for this single sliver of hope, they would of probably killed themselves by now.

C.O: "This is your team, Harry, Michael, James, and Samuel. Team, this is Y/N your squad leader, he has the mission report and I gave him map and everything he needs to get there, the rest of your gear is in that Humvee."

He pointed to a beat up Humvee that looked barely functional, but it was better than walking.

C.O: "Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go."

You looked upon your men, and sat down in front of them, you had an hour to prepare.

Y/N:" Hi."

They gave a dis-heartened hello back, and got your signal to prep, despite them having nothing else to lose, they still followed orders. You on the other hand had everything to lose.

Y/N: "Listen. I'm a coward."

They looked at you in shock for being able to admit something so seriously.

Y/N: "But, no more. We have to fight, and we have to live. We have to go home, because if we don't then the world is basically saying a big fuck you to our faces."

Harry chuckled a bit. And the rest kind of nodded their heads at your cheesy words, but to them it was everything. To have a leader that was willing to lead them even when they were seen as trash to the rest.

James: "We'll bring you home... squad leader."

After the hour of prep was up, you set out into the vast battlefield, hoping to not be seen as you cross into enemy lines.
