I looked a the lawn that we where getting ready for my wedding. Sixteen and married not bad! It wasn't going to be big at all. Just the family here, and the pastor.
James wasn't really close with his family which was kinda sad; I would've loved to meet them.
"Come on. Let's get you changed."
Ma said, her and Leslie dragged me off to the room and basically stripped me.
"Ya know. I'd love some privacy."
"Oh you don't have that."
Leslie said, they put on my petite coat then the corset.
"Oh sh- I'd like to breath."
"Learn not to."
"Uh-"
She tightened the strings then tied it.
"I haven't worn a corset in years."
"Oh quit complaining."
She sat me down and ma started putting on my boots.
"Can't believe your going to live in your own house."
Ma muttered,
"Ma its not like I'm leaving the country."
"I know, I know."
Leslie sat me down and started on my hair. I just fiddled around with my fingers and Ma came back with the Ivory dress. This was my Sunday best because God knows only the rich people can afford a wedding dress. What's the point in them if you only wear it once?
I stood up and they both got it over my head and straightened it out.
This dress reminded me of the Seventeen hundreds but it was beautiful. It had a small lace of ruffles on down the dress then at the bottom, and it had it around the neckline and the sleeves.
The sleeves had loose lace hanging from the ruffle. It had a modest dip showing a little bit not much.
I ran my hands down my waist and across the soft fabric.
"This dress feels different."
I said smiling,
"Probably because you are getting married in it."
Ma said, we walked out of the room and there was just a small area of chairs and the pastor was talking with pa.
"It's almost time."
"We wait till pa tells us."
~
I look back to the yard picturing what had happened, those beautiful words he said. How in the world was I good enough for him?
~
I walked out of the house arms intwined with pa's. We walked down the grass mine and James eyes glued on each other.
"Who hands this woman off?"
The pastor asked,
"Her father."
Daddy kissed my cheek and placed my hands in James's.
"You look beautiful."
He whispered,
I smiled and looked him up in down.
"Your not bad yourself."
I whispered back.
"I take you to be my wife and my spouse and I pledge to you the faith of my body, that I will be faithful to you and loyal with my body and my goods and that I will keep you in sickness and in health and in whatever condition it will please the Lord to place you, and that I shall not exchange you for better or worse until the end"
James said sliding the wedding band on my finger.
I said the same words just with Husband instead of wife.
"with this ring I wed you, with my body I honor you, and I endow you with the dowry agreed upon by my friends and yours"
I said, sliding his ring on.
"will you take Josephine, here present, to be your lawful wife, according to the rite of holy mother Church?"
The pastor asked,
"I will"
He answered,
"James, I promise as your wife and future mother of your children I will submit to you. I will do as you ask,
all I wish in return is your love, and respect."
"And you shall have that, and more. You are part of my life now"
"James, do you desire Josephine as your wedded wife?"
"Yes."
"Josephine,do you desire James as your wedded husband?"
"Yes."
"I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride."
He leaned down kissing me for a few short moment.
"For the first time Mr.and Mrs. Williams."
~
I quietly mumbled each word I wrote, the words he said and my own. I pictured the way his thumb trailed across my knuckles, and that kiss; short but sweet. Then I remember that night.
The one that seemed to happen so long ago.
