It's been a week since my baby took his first breath. April 17th. A week since the news of my husband. I had the baby to district me from the pain. I cry at night when my baby is asleep; then I act strong when he needs me.
My baby can't know my pain. He only needs to know my joy.
It was I cool sunny day. Alex and Lilly where playing Grace, Ma was next to me peeling peas, Mikey was inside, pa was smoking his cigar and Leslie was dusting a blanket.
All was calm until branches in the distance trees where heard breaking. A man came running through, towards the kids.
"The Mexicans are coming! There Coming!"
He shouts, Leslie ran to her kids pushing them behind her, me and Pa stood; I walked to the pillar placing an open hand on it.
Mikey came out of the house. As Leslie pushed the kids behind her, she asked 'What happened?'
"The Mexicans are coming. Burning and pillaging! You have to leave!"
He harshly grabbed her arm, and my face freezes in terror.
"Pack anything you can and run!"
He shouts, then runs off towards the town a mile away.
We all piled into the house except pa. Lily and James ran upstairs for there toys, ma cleared out a basket and I put Jim in.
"Come on!"
Pa shouts and places the cart down.
I ran out and placed the baby at the end of the porch and helped ma put chairs in.
There was a group of men coming towards us; Our neighbors.
"Mikey. Come on!"
They shouted,
"Kids come here."
Lilly and Alex ran to him. I continued helping pack until Lilly ran to me hugging my waist.
"I don't want daddy to leave!"
She cries, tears streaming from her small red eyes.
I held her head to my stomach and one on her back. Mikey walked towards the men with his guns.
Alex was fallowing him then stopped clinching his wooden pistol.
~
Once we packed everything I handed Jim to ma. She had him out of the basket since it was full of toys.
I put on my gloves and helped Leslie pull the cart. We started walking towards town.
~
When we got there people too had been packing there carts and wagons.
"Come join us!"
Leslie shouted, the women and old men who where too old to go off to war like pa joined. We pushed past a house full of Tejano's.
"In the house! Come join us!"
I shout, three woman ran out and her husband was here to help defend us.
"Lez there's a hill."
"Daddy! Grab the back of the cart we're going down a hill."
He did so, me and Lez started slipping but keeping each other up.
We finally got down it and started out for the Brazos to fallow it to San Jacinto. This trail wasn't going to be easy.
~
It was cold, dark, and wet. Me and Lez put the cart stoppers down and everyone made a place to camp.
"Josey. He's hungry."
Jim was making a fuss, reached for him and she's handed him to me.
"Come on fussy baby."
We made somewhere private so any woman could nurse.
I was patting his back. After about five minutes he was done and we got ready for bed.
He started coughing a bit, we should get to San Jacinto in two days so it'll be good to get him checked out.
~
It was the next morning and we where back in the trail. His cough was getting worse so my mind was pulled into distraction.
"It's too heavy!"
Pa exclaimed after seeing how we have been struggling.
"Get this shit off."
He threw off the two chairs and the table.
"That's my mother's!"
Ma exclaimed.
"She ain't here no more."
Pa answered, he went to grab my desk and I slapped his hand.
"No one trows this out."
I said, anger rising in my voice. He nodded in understanding backing off; then he threw off a little more.
"Try that."
We started pulling and it was lighter.
"That's actually better."
Lez whispered to me, I laughed and we both looked back to the road.
We had been walking for hours with barley any rest.
It was probably noon or one o' clock.
"Ma how's the baby?"
Leslie asked, I looked over in hope only to see ma shake her head.
