I park my car in the driveway, then both Corey and I walk into the house. We both then walk up to my room, and fall on to the bed mentally exhausted.
"Corey."
"Yea?"
"How are you feeling?" He's silent for a moment before he answers.
"I...don't know. I don't know what's going to happen to my dad or my mom. Are they going to divorce? I'm shocked and confused, and scared." He admits. I sit up and look at him. His eyes are filled with water, but he doesn't shed a tear. Seeing that sight, of him being strong at the moment, breaks my heart, but I say nothing and nod my head.
I look over at the clock, and it reads 6:35pm.
"So, what do you want to do?" I ask him. He doesn't say anything. "Do you want to watch a movie, play a game, eat..." I list off the options and there is still no response. I look back at him and his eyes are closed, an his chest is rising and falling slightly. I give him a small smile. He looks adorable when he's asleep.
I grab a blanket and carefully place it over him, then I lean over and give him a kiss on his forehead. As I walk away, I feel my cheeks start to burn slightly, and I smile once again.
I spend the next hour watching TV and pigging out on food. From all the emotional stress, I didn't realize how hungry I was. I then get a phone call and look down to see Belle is calling me.
"Ello darling," I greet in a British accent as I answer the phone. I hear her crack up on the other end of the phone.
"Yo wassup my homie?" She responds and we both laugh.
"Hey, look, I have to tell you something really important, and you can't say a word to anyone else."
"Yea sure, go ahead, what"s up?" I then begin to explain the whole situation that happened several hours agp, remembering the situation in clear detail. By the time I was done explaining it, I was twenty-five minutes into the phone call.
"Whoa..." Is all she responds with.
"Yea," I huff out. "I know. I still can't believe it happened." I look at the time on my phone to see it's already 8:00pm.
"Honestly Zelda," she speaks again. "I'm really proud of you. You helped the kid more than anyone has."
"Thanks." I respond to her praise. I then hear the garage door open and laughter entering the house. "Yo, my parents are home. I'll talk to you later." We both say our goodbyes and hang up the phone. I walk into the kitchen, where my parents are talking loudly.
"Hey, guys," I whisper shout to them. "I know you're having fun, but you need to keep it down. Corey's asleep upstairs."
"Why in the world is he upstairs in the first place? Let alone sleeping." She gives me a disapproving look with a stern voice.
"Well, there's a bit of a situation-"
"Oh, hello Corey." My dad greets, and I spin around to see a sleepy Corey, rubbing his eyes. He has large dark circles under his eyes and his hair is scattered in every direction.
"Hello Mr.Hamilton." He greets back.
"Excuse me young man, but what do you think-" my mom begins to raise her voice at him and his eyes widen in fear, and he shy's down a bit before I intervene.
"What do you think you're doing mom?!" I yell at her, stepping in front of him.
"He has no right to be sleeping upstairs in this house, especially without me or your father here!"
"Excuse me, he has every right!" I yell back, feeling my face get hot from the anger inside me. "Especially after tonight!" My dad steps in between us, pushing us apart.
"Ok, Zelda, take a breath," my dad tells me. I relax a bit, my hands and jaw still clenched. "What happened tonight?" He speaks calmly to me.
"Corey's dad finally snapped and beat his mom! And you know what?" I shove past my dad to look at my angry mother in the eye. "If it weren't for Corey, he would of beaten me too! Corey saved his mom and me! So don't you ever speak to Corey in that tone ever again!" My mom eye's relax a bit, and see sympathy replace anger.
"Is that really what happened?" My mom asks in a calm voice. I nod my head. Both my parents huff out a breath.
"What can we do to help?" My dad asks.
"Corey stays the night." I demand. My mom opens her mouth to object, but my dad puts a hand over her mouth before she speaks.
"Yes, that's perfectly fine. Do you have clothes for yourself?" He questions Corey. He shakes his head slightly. "Well I'm not sure if any of my clothes will fit you, but you're welcome to any of mine."
"Thank you." He smiles slightly.
"Hey Corey, you want some dinner?" I ask him. He puts a hand to his stomach, then nods his head and we both laugh.
**
"Come on in! Let me see!" I shout to Corey. He walks into my room wearing my dad's pajamas, which are three times bigger than him. I snort out a laugh but try to keep it contained. He looks down at the ground embarrassed.
"Oh don't be so embarrassed. You look cute."
"Cute?" He questions.
"Yea. Like, adorable, like a little puppy." He blushes at my response, but looks away trying to hide it. I yawn loudly and he yawns as well. "What time is it?" I ask out loud. I turn to look at my clock, to see its past midnight. "Holy crap it's already midnight. I think we need to head to bed," I tell him while stretching my arms upward. He yawns once more.
"Yea I agree."
He grabs the sleeping bag that was on my chair and begins to set it up.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"I'm setting up my sleeping bag?" He responds back confused.
"No no," I shake my finger. "That's my sleeping bag."
"But I don't think that's fair-" I begin to hush him very loudly.
"You get the bed. Don't try to argue." He huffs out a breath of defeat. He climbs into my bed and pulls the blankets over him. "Goodnight Corey." I turn off the light and walk over to the sleeping bag. I don't hear him respond. I look over and he's already out. "That kid falls asleep way too fast," I mutter to myself. Before climbing into my sleeping bag, I lean over his sleeping body.
"You really are cute when you're asleep." I comment to myself quietly. I move a piece of hair out of his face, and kiss his forehead again.
I climb into my sleeping bag, and close my eyes, imagining how funny he looked in my dad's oversized clothes.
