It's another Tuesday morning at school, and I can't stop making funny faces at Corey and Belle as they both try not to burst out laughing. I look over at the clock to see it's almost the end of third period.
"Alright you guys, one last announcement before the bell rings. Tomorrow you must present your scenes in front of the class," Mr.Marks announces, leaning on his desk. Everybody begins to chatter with each other about it as the bell rings. I walk up to Corey.
"Do you want to come to my house and practice the scene, since we really haven't done much," I tell him. He looks up at me and smiles, and his cheeks redden a bit.
"Yea I probably should."
"How about you meet me by my car and I'll take you home with me while I drop off Belle as well."
"Sounds good to me, I really should get my license." He says out loud, more to himself. I wave a goodbye to him and start to walk out of the class with Belle.
"You and Corey have really bonded recently." She states, almost having an implying tone to her voice.
"Yea he's a cool kid, and we really get along." I smile at the thought of the short quiet kid. I look at her and she has a smug grin on her face with an eyebrow cocked. "What's that look for?!"
"Does Corey tickle you fancy?" Her smug grin widens.
"You're really funny. No he doesn't, he's just a really awesome friend."
"I love you Zelda, but my bullshit detector is going off."
"Well it's the truth. By the way, what's today?" I ask her.
"February 17."
"Wait what?! Last time I checked it was January." I say out loud, shocked.
"Well you must of been pretty busy. Well we better get to class before we're late." She comments while looking at the time on her phone. I then say my goodbye to her, giving her a big hug and heading towards my class.
As I walk I start to hear someone walk behind me. Then the walk start to turn into a run and I whip around only to be almost bulldozed and the black figure running at me.
I step out of the way at the last second, seeing the person zoom past me. They then slow and stop, then look back at me. I couldn't see whoever it was, since their black hood was covering their face. The person then walks away, entering the stairwell next to them.
My heart is beating out of control and I'm shaking tremendously. I was almost attacked. Who would try to do that?
The bell interrupts my thoughts and I start to sprint towards my next class, hoping the person wouldn't come back.
**
"Hey you found it!" I yell to Corey as I walk with Belle to my car. We all throw our backpacks into the trunk.
"Ok who gets shot gun?" They start to do rock paper scissors shoot, and Corey wins.
"God dammit! You cheated!" Belle yells at him. He lets out a small chuckle before climbing into the passenger seat. We then speed away from the school, blaring music in my car and doing mindless chatter about almost anything.
After about ten minutes, we arrive at Belle's house and drop her off, yelling many bye's out of the window as I drive away.
"You two are really close." Corey states to me.
"She's been my best friend since third grade." I reply to him, a nostalgic smile spreading across my face.
"What's it like?"
"What?"
"Being so closely intertwined with someone like that."
His words pierced my heart with sadness. He really hasn't had many people in his life to care for him like Belle and I do for each other.
"I'll show you with time Corey." I look at him, but he continues to stare out the window. We finally arrive at my house and we climb out of the car and into the house.
"Mom? Dad?" I call out, awaiting for a response.
"Yea I'm home," I hear from upstairs. From the sound of it, it sounds like my mom's voice.
"I'm home. Corey's here." I yell back to her, raiding the fridge of food. "Want some strawberries?" I ask him. He nods his head feverishly and I snort loudly. Corey and I start to munch on the strawberries as I hear my mom walk into the kitchen.
"Well hello Corey," my mom greets him, giving him a mom hug from behind.
"We're going to finish our project so we'll be in my room." I tell my mom, grabbing a strawberry, and shoving it into his face where he swats it away.
"Alright, I'll be heading to work soon."
"Have a good day." I say to her, giving her a hug and grabbing the bowl of strawberries and book and heading up the stairs with Corey right behind me.
"Alright, ready for some intense practicing?" I joke with him, closing the door.
"Ready."
For the next hour, we practiced, goofed off, shoved strawberries in each other's faces, jokingly feeding one another, and still haven't done the kiss. We've gotten to the point of being able to do the scene without the book with was a big improvement.
"Alright, alright," I laugh out. "We did really well, but-"
"But what?"
"We still haven't kissed."
He looks away when I say it, and I feel bad for doing so.
"I'll do it tomorrow."
"Are you sure? You don't want to try it?" I ask, half of me hoping that he wants to do it now.
"Yea I'm sure."
"Well we can probably take a break." I huff out in relief. We both fall on my bed again, staring at the ceiling.
"I'm nervous for tomorrow." He says out of the blue.
"It'll be ok Corey. I understand the stage fright, but as long as you keep your eyes on me, you'll be fine. I promise you." I place my hand awkwardly on his face in comfort and he laughs.
"You promise?"
"I absolutely promise you Corey."
