I walk in class and sit down in my usual seat. I usually just go mute until the teacher calls on me or something. But today people start asking me questions. Specifically about April. This is why I hate this place.
"Hey Aurora?" I just look at her. The girl who never bothered to talk to me but talks too much. She's what you call a "pick me" girl. I think her name is Emma or Rebecca or something. I absolutely hate them. I try not to show it though. "What's up with you and that April kid?" I cock my head to the side and laugh a little. I pick up the Algebra 2 book and look over all the formulas. Whoever created the math spectrum in general better had died in a horrible way. Just saying.
"So what's the deal? Just tell us already. No one is judging you." Before she can start nagging me some more the bell rings and I pack up all my stuff. Teachers always let me leave first because they never have a reason to make me wait. After I'm finished packing my backpack my teacher dismisses me while he holds everyone back. Maybe if they weren't always in somebody's business they would've gotten their work done.
As I reach the door he releases some other students. Ugghhh more kids snooping around. I push open the door and there stands the pink-lipped beauty.
"Hey April. How'd you get out early?"
"I just went straight mute."
"Well I'm honored to not get the same treatment."
"Consider yourself special."
"Oh trust me I am." She giggles a bit and we start walking to who knows where. It's a nice comfortable silence filling the air before she breaks it.
"Did people ask you questions?"
"Questions about what exactly?"
"About why all of a sudden we are seen together."
"Honestly yeah they did."
"What did you say?"
"Nothing. I looked at them, gave them a little amused laugh, then went back to work. What did you say?"
"I never said anyone asked me anything."
"You didn't have to."
"Right. Anyways I just simply didn't answer them. I didn't even look at them."
"Ouuu were playing the mysterious game. I like it." She laughs this time but a little loud so people start to turn their heads. After her laughter dies down she replies to my comment.
"Yeah I guess so. Seems fun. I don't know how we came to that silent agreement but it works." It's my turn to laugh. She has a point. We barely know what we are to each other so it's only fair we make others wonder too.
"Well since we both have free period, what's the plan?"
"Library?"
"Sure let's go." We walk over to the library and Mrs.Harris seems surprised to see us together. She's not the first.
"Wait Aurora I have the perfect idea."
"Well what is it kiddo?" She shoots me a glare and I throw my hands up in surrender. She just rolls her eyes before speaking again.
"We both have two minutes to pick out books for each other. Doesn't matter what genre it came from. Grab as many books as you can. Got it?"
"Wait. How am I supposed to know what books you like to read?"
"That's the fun of it. Obviously."
"Well I'm in!"
"Yaayy!" She says while quietly clapping. I mean after all we are still in the library. We both set a timer on when we both say, "Go!" Mrs. Harris shushes us which causes us to let out a quiet giggle. We run through the aisles finding books we think the other would like and putting back the ones we don't think they will like. By the time the timer goes off we end up with five books each.
"Ok April whatcha got?"
"Uh I don't know if you like them but here."
"Doesn't matter I'll still read them all." I grab the books from her and I already read one of them but the other four looks pretty interesting.
"Do you like them?"
"Yep I absolutely do. I read 'One Of Us Is Lying' but the others seem very interesting too."
"Oh. Well which ones did you get for me?" I hold the books out to her and she grabs them. She stops on one of them in particular. I recognize the cover. It's 'They Both Die At The End' one of my favorites. In a blink of an eye she has her arms wrapped around me.
"April you okay?"
"Huh. Oh yeah sorry." She releases me from the hug but doesn't move back.
"Stop apologizing. I don't mind hugs." After I say that she goes and hugs me again. This time with a squeal.
"I've been looking for this book everywhere! How did you find it?!"
"It was in the back sections for some reasons. I don't even know how I got back there." She laughs and smiles after letting me out of the hug again.
"Glad you like it." She blushes and goes to check out the books. I follow and when we are done we head to my locker.
"Why are we at your locker?"
"Are you allergic to chocolate?"
"No. Why? And you never answered my question."
"These should answer it." I pull out two perfectly wrapped pieces of my moms famous chocolate cake. Literally it's famous she owns the best bakery in the state.
"Oh. My. God. I love chocolate cake!" She says as she grabs the dessert and unwraps it. She rips off a piece and eats it letting out a dreamy moan.
"Is this from Miranda's Godly Bakery?"
"Yep. Miranda is my mom. She literally owns the whole thing."
"She's your mom?!" I giggle and nod my head yes.
"Your lying." I raise my eyebrow at her.
"No I'm not."
"I want proof."
"Whatever you say kiddo." She glares at me. "What! I'm still working on it!" I pull my phone out of my back pocket and pull up a picture of me and my mom. I even show her one from when I was turning five.
"That's photoshopped."
"You know if you wanted to meet her you could've just asked me."
"Omg can I?!" She says totally giving away her bluff. I just nod my head and eat the rest of my cake. Well more like ate two bites then gave the rest to April.
"You wanna meet her today?"
"I can meet her today?!"
"Um yeah. She would be thrilled to meet you."
"She will?"
"Yep. She thinks it's about time I interact with something other than a book. Like a real human, which you are."
"Ummm ok I'm in."
"Sounds like a plan. Uhhh meet me here after school?"
"Yep. Will do Ro Ro."
"My dad calls me that."
"Dang it! I thought about that one for a long time too. Time to figure out a new one."
"You and me both."
We kiss each other on the cheek good bye before walking opposite ways to our classes.
