Just friends?

Few stars were out, the pair
walked side by side in silence.
Many would say its ironic
that they were thinking
of the same thing.

"Hey" They said simultaneously.
"Sorry, you go first"
She laughed and snuggled
into the thick scarf
wrapped around her neck.
"Are you cold?"
"No, the scarf is just super soft...
like a cloud" Her voice so soft
that it could barely be heard,
"So what did you want to say?"

"Forgot" He shrugged.
"Well, let me know when
you remember"
Truth was, he didnt forget.
It was a pride issue.
And when he had finally
swallowed his pride,
she spoke.
It was one of the few times
he wished that she had
just stayed quiet.

In a way, he was also
glad she spoke.
Most likely, she would've
teased him for what
he was going to say.

"Tobiyama, i know you remember.
So just tell me, alright?"
Right, she knows him
better than that.

"Thanks" The simple word of
gratitude came out rather
harsh but she paid it no mind.
"For?" Her eyes remained
fixed on the path ahead.
"For being my friend"

She stopped dead in her
tracks and stared him
right into his eyes,
"We're... just... friends?"
Thats not what he meant .

"Of course we are"
"Then, dont thank me"
Her voice was low
and she now stared at her shoes.

Now ive done it.
"Dont thank me for being your friend"
She looked up at him
and smiled,
"thank me for being your best  friend"
He stayed silent
for some time.
He thought he had
accidentally upset her.

"Thanks"
"Tobiyama, being just  friends
would suck wouldn't it?"

Boy, was he thankful that it was dark.
She'd tease him if she saw the blush
he currently wore.

"It would suck"

"Bestfriends is better.
I mean, it's not the best.
But it's better than being just
friends. Boring old
friends." Her voice became
so low, he could barely hear,
"But if it were me, i wouldnt
want to be best friends either.
There's something better than that"

He looked at her, "What?"
She cowered in her scarf and waved
her hand, "Ah nothing.
It's for the best. Goodnight Tobiyama.
Text me when you get home,
to make sure you're safe"
She smiled sadly and skipped away.

He heard.
He just didn't know if he heard
her correctly.
He wished that she had just
repeated it.

Just friends sucks,
best friends is great,
but there's something more,
something better than that.
