Hopeless Romantic

If he had to put her personality
into a few words, a
hopeless romantic would
be there.

Her room had 2 huge shelves, one
filled with romance novels and
manga. The other shelf had tons
of romance movies.
Old, new, western, romcoms,
chickflicks, heartthrobs.
Any type of romance you could think
of, she had. And she was proud too.
Her collection was continuing to grow
with every book she read, with
every movie she watched.

He thought she was ridiculous.
She would talk his ear off about
love at first sight, enemies to lovers,
friends to lovers, some crap about
love being written in the stars,
something about having a one,
true soulmate.
It was utter crap.

But,
he listened.
he listened because
he saw how she truly
loved the idea of being in love.
She said, "Sometimes I think that
there's only one right person for us.
Someone we are destined to be with,
someone who makes our heart squeeze
when we realize just how much we
love them. I believe it.
Wholeheartedly."
He didn't miss the longing sparkle
in her eye either.
She was in love with the idea
of being in love.
She was a fool.

Still, she wasnt like most hopeless
romantics. The special thing about
her was that she was
completely in sync with reality. And
the reality often broke her heart.
"I dream of falling in love all the time.
I dream loving someone so much
that my heart overflows with
happiness and I just cannot
hide away that giddy moronic smile
they put on me. But.. that's
all it'll ever be, Yama. A dream.
Nothing more. Because a love
like that simply doesn't exist.
If it did, yo- things would've been
different"

He noticed that whenever she read,
she would occasionally put her book
down and take a deep breath, and
every single time she did that,
she'd be blushing.
Sometimes, she'd laugh or
squeal out of excitement.
It was during those times, he'd
wonder what she was reading and
why did it make her blush so much.

He asked one day and
instantly regretted it.
"You see" She put her book down
and grinned. "Look how in love
they are. See?" She pointed
at a line on the page, "Right there he
says 'I shared my damned rice with
you. Of course I'm in love with you' "
She squealed, "He loves him
enough to share his rice!! How cute
is that!?!?" Her cheeks
were stupidly pink.
Truly idiotic.

There was also that one time,
he had accidentally said something
that reminded her of this
supposedly depressing story
she read and mid conversation,
she bursted into tears,
crying about how the ending
of the story just wasn't fair and
how the thing that Kageyama said
only rubbed salt in the wound.
There was no doubt about it,
she's insane.

And the irony of it all was
that she genuinely loathed
love stories that ended in
heartbreak. And it was for that
reason. Anytime she thought of how
unfair the endings were, she'd cry.

Sometimes, she would randomly
show up at his house, sobbing over
some devastating book she read.

"But" She hiccuped, "He died"
He was currently rubbing her back
in a very awkward manner.
He didn't understand.
"Why are you so upset over his death?
You cry like you knew him personally"
She stared at him as if he were
a moron.
"They were meant to be, Tobiyama.
All he could do was sit on their
bed and stare at the stars on his
ceiling. Imagine how empty he felt
with his other half gone?"
He had no words. she spoke
nonsense. She acted like he read
the story too.
"When I get home, I'm throwing
away that stupid projector
you bought me"
"No you're not, it was expensive"
He remembered how she WHINED
for that damned star projector.
Tears fell down her face like
rivers, "If you die and leave me with
only that stupid projector and
a note, i swear I'll never forgive you." Though she was crying,
her voice was sharp and
threatening.
"I'm not dying anytime soon"
Almost immediately, she shot him
a knowing look and averted her gaze,
as if to apologize.

They both knew full well that they
were running on borrowed time.
They witnessed it first hand when
Kageyamas grandfather died.

That's why she spent weeks trying
to pry him from his bed.
That's why she spent months trying
to break his terrible habits.
That's why she ran to his house
whenever she cried, and why she
called him whenever her thinking
became too much to handle.
Even if his grandfather wasnt a
first hand lesson, she read enough
stories to know that sometimes,
love isn't forever. Her time
with him could be cut short at
any point.

One night, they laid on top of his
roof, her head rested on his shoulder.
Out of nowhere, she laughed,
"The stars are so pretty, Tobio. It
reminds me of this story I read.
They fell in love under the stars.
But, it was a tragic story." She
whispered.
"You see, they fell in love. But
it was the kind of love that hurt,
a love that made your chest dense
and heavy, yet empty. It was tragic
because their love for each other
was so" Her bottom lip
wobbled, "It was so strong that
all they knew how to do was hurt
each other. Like how a thousand
small cuts could kill a person.
The tragedy of it all was that
they both were so oblivious to
each others feelings. Neither of them
confessed. One got married, the other
moved across the world.
But at night
They dreamed of each other
They loved each other.
The tragedy was that they were
meant to be soulmates but
their happy ending just wasn't in the
books. It didn't happen for them."

He really did wonder why she
even felt the need to tell him such
a thing. Was she dropping a hint?
No, that would just be ridiculous.
Shes ridiculous.
she's a hopeless romantic.

After the long silence, she sighed.
Of course, she didnt expect any
kind of response from him. She never
received any responses when she
talked about a depressing love
story.

"This isnt the case though.
There's no tragedy this time,
not for me"
Only then did he look at her,
she smiled at the sky as if she were
thanking it.
"Theres no tragedy for me"
She repeated and closed her eyes.
