BESTIES sorry for the unofficial lil hiatus asdfgh I'm back at school in person and I'm absolutely dead inside </3
anyway um hi fanart 4 u~
The braided girl you assumed to be Tonia took Teucer's hand and led him away. She glanced back at Childe like she knew what was going on, but at the same time look confused and concerned. He gave her a grin before turning back you and resetting his features to that cold stare you hadn't seen in some weeks.
"Are you coming down, or do I have to climb up there?" he asked nonchalantly. He put his hands in his pockets and shifted his weight onto one leg, making it look like he didn't care.
Your hands were growing clammy despite the cold weather, and words refused to leave your mouth. You'd let yourself forget he was a Harbinger like Scaramouche, who had only been merciful because he got bored with you. Noticing you fumbling for a response, Xiao leaned in and muttered, "He won't do anything with his siblings here," Which helped to reassure you for the time being.
Childe seemed to grow impatient with waiting for you to come to him, so he climbed up the playground equipment himself. The structure shook from the impact of him landing after hurdling the railing. You stiffened and Xiao stepped in front of you like a guard dog.
"Relax, relax, I'm not here to hurt her," Childe put a hand up, the other still in his pocket, "As I said, I'd like to catch up." His eyes slid from you to Xiao, and he gave the Adeptus a sly smirk, "You wanna kill me so bad it makes you look stupid. And you're even more of a fool to think you can do it without..." he looked back at you, "repercussions."
Xiao clenched his free hand and raised it, but you tugged on the one you were still holding to keep him from hitting Childe. "W-what do you want, Tartaglia?" you asked, your voice cracking,
Childe frowned a bit at the use of his formal name, but didn't mention it, "Are you familiar with the phrase 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away?'" His sharp blue eyes bored into yours like he was trying to convey something else entirely.
"I- I mean, of course, I am... But how is that relevant to the situation..?" You answered timidly.
He opened his mouth to reply, but closed it and turned to Xiao, "Would you mind leaving us be? This doesn't concern you, little Adeptus."
"Absolutely the fuck not." Xiao sneered. At the same time, you mumbled "Please just do what he says." Xiao turned to look at you with widened eyes, to confirm that you had told him to go.
"He could hurt you if you don't, or worse," You told him before releasing your tight grasp on his hand. He nodded and went far enough away that he couldn't hear your conversation, but could easily keep an eye on you.
Now alone with Childe, you dug your hands into your pockets and put as much distance in between you as you could on the relatively small platform. His eyes met yours again, and you got lost in that deep blue. You were terrified, of course, but something about the way they reflected the ocean reassured you.
He took a step forward causing you to snap out of it, "Now that we're alone, back to what I said before. The apple keeping the doctor away, yada yada. But he's coming," his expression turned completely serious, with a slight trace of concern, "And almost nothing can stop him from getting what he wants. Especially when the thing he wants is a new toy." His last words were filled with contempt.
Your eyes widened as you slowly understood what he meant, "Wh-why would you tell me this? I thought you wanted me dead, so why warn me about anything I-"
He cut you off, "I changed my mind. I know I promised to get rid of you, and I always keep my promises. But this is the first I've ever broken," his voice lowered, and you almost couldn't hear the next part, "It seems you're the exception to all of my rules, Y/N."
You wanted to reply, to thank him for his mercy, or to yell at him or something, but no words came. Your voice simply wouldn't cooperate, so you just stared at him in disbelief. You weren't entirely sure how much time passed like that until you noticed figures approaching behind him. You must have been here long enough that Childe's siblings assumed you were done and came back to get their brother.
Anton called out to him, "Oi, Ajax! Let's get home already I'm staaarving!"
Childe turned to them and his friendly grin returned as if he hadn't just told you you were in a lot of danger, "Ahaha, alright, alright, be patient! Let me just say goodbye to my friend here."
"Ooh, ooh! Can Miss Nice Lady come with us for dinner?" Teucer piped in, bouncing excitedly.
Childe gave you a wary look before you could reject the boy's offer. "It's safer if you do, the other Harbingers have sworn to leave my family alone," he said to you quietly.
"I..." your first instinct was to say no and race home, but Childe was right. With at least one Harbinger after you, the safest place for you would be the one place they'd promised not to go. Besides, Teucer looked so excited, how could you possibly say no? "Okay. I'll come with you."
