"What— what do you mean?" Kai asked, sitting up. A quiver of uncertainty had entered his voice. He didn't sound freaked out but more...confused. He murmured something under his breath and Emma felt soft fabric wrap around her; oversized pants and a cotton tunic. Yeah, okay, she understood that they couldn't have this conversation naked.

" What else could that mean?" She glanced at her empty hand that had been curled around his a second ago. Maybe she shouldn't have...

" How?" He asked, voice straining as if it physically pained him. His face revealed nothing. Even Emma couldn't tell what was going through him.

" This was a mistake. Forget I–"

" No," he said, more gently now. " I don't understand. How? "

" How do I love you?"

" Yes, how is that possible?" He looked bewildered.

" I...." She realized he wasn't just talking about her, but all the things he'd done, and how despite those could still love him. Emma wasn't even sure where to begin. She kept her eyes trained on the ground as she took a shaky breath and began. " Before prison world I was a shadow. Dan, he uh—I thought I loved him but..." She shrugged slightly. " There's no love in violence. None. My brother told me that. And after Steve died I really had no reason to live. I'd been alive for more than a hundred years. That's a long time. And that night, when I stormed Joshua's house, a part of me was happy that everything was going to end.

"  Only it didn't. He locked me up. And you, you were there. Everyday, you were there. Laughing, making jokes,  cooking food for me even though you knew I wouldn't eat it. You've helped me in ways you don't know." Smiling through her tears, voice breaking, she whispered, " You brought me back."

Kai clenched his jaw, a shiver piercing through him as she softly whispered the words that he so honestly wished he could understand. " I love you."

He crouched down on the floor, grabbing her hands to make her listen. " But Em," he said urgently, expression still a mix between bewildered and confused. " I've killed people. My siblings. That guy in the taxi. And...and–"

" I've killed people to save myself in the past. More than you. I don't regret it."

" But Love, Em— I..."

" I know what I'm saying must be hard to...digest. But I just needed you to know. You don't have to say the words back."

He remained quiet for a long moment.

" It's not a weakness," Emma said in the silence.

" How could you possibly know that?" She never thought she'd hear him sound so vulnerable. There were so many facets of him falling apart and coming together.
