Kai was many things but patient, especially when he was hungry. As it grew dark outside, the temperature inside the house dropped more and more, and neither of them had the energy to stand and make dinner from scratch. " She must've stored something!" Kai said.

Emma's clothes reeked like old meat and her eyes had started to droop from exhaustion. The last thing she wanted was to pass out with the sick feeling of dried blood clinging to her chest. " Kai," she groaned. " Let's just... shower and rest for now, we'll have something in the morning when our head's all cleared."

Kai clicked his tongue. " You know I can't sleep on an empty stomach. And I won't let you either, you need your strength back."

Emma yawned and pulled herself up from where she had been sitting on the floor, almost stumbled and fell face-first. " I'm going to shower...no wait, there are no showers. Anyways, I'm going to sleep. You can join me whenever you're done looking for....what are you looking-" She shook her head. " Right— food."

Yeah, she was tired alright, he thought. " Go ahead," he said. " I'll be there in a minute."

Emma half dragged her feet through the hallway to the living room. The Salvatore house was built differently in 1903. The wooden furniture, the old curtains, the smell of burnt candles, the wallpaper, it reminded her of a certain home in New Orleans. Even thinking about it made her heart cry a river. She recalled the smell of fresh paint and the heap of ballroom dresses, how both friends had loved each other. Though it wasn't enough in the end. They deserved better.

She stopped in her tracks. If she wasn't what she was Emma would have probably missed it. Missed that faint hum of magic that seemed to seep through from below a huge dresser drawer. She straightened.

She lightly pounded her fist on the wall behind the dresser. Hallow. Though she could have sworn she heard a low cracking sound of bones. " Kai," she called.

" Don't tell me you fell face-first on the floor," came the reply from across the hall.

Emma easily pulled the dresser aside with her powers. She ran her finger along the wooden ledge and her finger slid into a crack.  A slide door.

" Kai!"  she called again.

" Yes?" He poked his head from the kitchen corridor. He took in the look on her face, the way she kept studying the wall, the dresser next to her blocking the hallway ahead at an odd angle. Kai moved to stand next to her. " What are you-"

She spoke softly. " There's something in there."

Kai narrowed his eyes. Emma slid the door open and both of them took a step back. There was nothing ahead. Nothing. It was as dark as the pits of hell. A howling wind escaped the dark and washed over her, calling. Inviting. Emma shivered and moved closer to Kai.
