new beginnings in tokyo.

"nana, hurry up!"

"coming, mom!"

nanako stuffed her phone in her pocket and grabbed her backpack. today was the day--the first day of high school. nanako took a deep breath and quickly snuck a peek at herself in the mirror, fixing her hair.

"i need to make a good first impression," nanako mumbled to herself, running her fingers through her scalp.

"nana, stop loitering around the mirror!"

nanako widened her eyes and ran through her door. "got it, mom!"

as nanako sped down the stairs, she skipped a step, causing her to tumble down and collapse in front of her mom who was waiting for her.

"good grief nana, you're so clumsy!" mrs. sugiyama, nanako's mother, sighed. "come on, let's go to the subway station."

nanako immediately stood up and jokingly help up an army salute, screaming, "yessir!"

✧ ✧ ✧

nanako sat quietly on the train with her red backpack on her lap. her mother already got off on her stop to the hospital for work.

back in miyagi, nanako would usually take the bus home. but now, she had to use the train as transportation. the city life was just slightly different yet felt too brand new for comfort.

as the train quickly came to nanako's stop, the girl stood up and walked out, hidden by the huge crowd. she whipped out her phone and followed the rest of her map's directions to her new school: metropolitan nekoma high.

"turn right and... oh!"

nanako fixed her eyes on the school towering over her. it was so different from her previous school, kitagawa daiichi junior high. the busy streets around the school didn't seem to stop as students entered the campus, matching uniforms with nanako's.

although they were wearing the same thing—white polo shirt, black sweater vest, red bow, navy blazer, and gray skirt—nanako knew that she definitely didn't fit in. most, if not all, of these fellow first-years already resided in nerima ward during junior high, so they most likely were somewhat familiar with each other.

nanako frowned. the sight of other first-years easily running up to their one or two friends made her miss kageyama even more, even though their friendship broke apart in their last few months of junior high.

introvert was definitely not a word to describe nanako—she was a full blown extrovert and easily made friends. but, not many of them felt like true friends to her. sure, she had a good relationship with practically everyone, but the only person she felt extremely close to was kageyama. nonetheless, it didn't seem like kageyama would miss her at this point.

nanako's frown dug deeper into her face, grimacing at memories of their last argument. realizing that she hadn't taken a step in the campus, she shook away the negative thoughts and officially entered nekoma high.

nanako searched for the email her mother sent her of her schedule. "class 1-1, first day in the first class, huh?"

she opened the doors to her new classroom, where everyone was already in pairs or trios, catching each other up on their summer. nanako definitely felt lonely.
