A young woman walked along the beach of Port Royal, holding a small bundle in her arms. The shining light of a moon made the ocean water glimmer in the dark of night. The woman, unknown by many, reached up to the town, and began walking through the dark streets. She was looking for something. A place she hadn't been in a long time.

When she came across the building she was looking for, she dropped to her knees, and placed the bundle she held on the steps of the shop. It was a small boutique, owned by an old friend of the woman's.

"My sweet child, (Y/n)" the woman started. "You will know much in this life, but I pray you do not find where you came from. I am unable to support you, my dear, and I would rather know you to be alive with someone else, than starving with me." The baby in the bundle looked up at her mother with big, (y/e/c) eyes, just like her mother's. The woman took off her necklace, a string with a small corked jar filled with small seashells, and placed it gently around the baby's neck. "I love you, my darling. Don't ever forget that."

The woman placed a note in the cloth surrounding the child

The woman placed a note in the cloth surrounding the child. Kissing her daughter goodbye one last time, the woman knocked on the door to alert whoever inside, and ran away.

A tall, fair lady, Johanna Mills, frowned at the knock on her door. She put aside her work, sewing up a dress for a client, and got up, muttering about people disturbing her door on her day off. Opening it, she furrowed her eyebrows at the sight of no one, until she heard the soft cries of the child at her feet.

Johnna bent down, noticing the letter, and read it. She gasped in shock, now knowing that this child was the child of her oldest friend, whom she hadn't spoken to in years.

My old friend, Johanna,

I am sorry to have to place this upon you, but I had no where else to turn. My daughter, (Y/n), shall be in your care. I cannot support her, no matter how much I wish I could. That is why I ask for your help, my friend.

Please, raise my child to be a strong young woman. Teach her your talents if you will, but I beg of you, do not cast her aside. I am unable to keep us both alive. I do not want to leave her, but I trust you with my life.

I cannot tell you the identity of my daughter's father, for her protection, as well as his. He may not be the best of men, but I still loved him. He gave me my beloved (Y/n), and I will be grateful for that forever.

I leave with her nothing but the necklace I gave her, and her name, Rogers. Love her as I would have, and let her chose her own path, no matter what that may be.

Burn this letter once you've read it.

Sincerely, Maria Rogers

Johanna looked down at (Y/n), and picked her up with a loving touch. The baby stopped crying, and looked up into the eyes of her caretaker.

"Alright, (Y/n) Rogers. I will take care of you now, my dear." Johanna said, bringing the girl inside.

Johanna Mills raised (Y/n) Rogers to be a fine young woman. At the age of 5, she began to teach her adoptive daughter all she knew about sewing and fixing up clothing and such. (Y/n) loved to sew, and as she got older, became more and more adapt at it.

Little did they know, Maria Rogers was killed at sea for trying to help the man she loved, only to be killed by his enemy's hand.

When young Elizabeth Swann came into town, who was a few years younger than (Y/n), Governor Swann began to bring his daughter to the so-called best seamstresses in town. Johanna and (Y/n) began taking over the job of being the Governor's official seamstresses. He was a kind man, and had a lovely daughter who (Y/n) could get along with well.

The two girls quickly became best friends, and it wasn't long before Elizabeth introduced (Y/n) to William Turner, the boy she had saved in the crossing from England. Will was to be trained as a blacksmith under Mr. Brown.

The three grew up together in the small settlement of Port Royal. (Y/n), being the eldest, was mainly there to keep Will and Elizabeth in line. However, all three of them got into much trouble together, no matter who was the oldest.

Elizabeth grew on her fascination with pirates, something Will could never understand. Will loathed pirates and everything they stood for. But, it was obvious he was very much in love with the girl, and (Y/n) only hoped that someday he would be brave enough to tell her.

(Y/n) wasn't looking for a man to support her. No one really caught her interest long term. Sure, there were a few crushes here and there. James Norrington was an especially long one compared to the others, but even he couldn't keep her affection long enough. (Y/n) began to become worried that Johanna may marry her off to someone she didn't love just to make sure that she was supported. She knew that was the last thing Johanna wanted to do, but in the eyes of society, it was the only thing she could do.

(Y/n) may have worked as a seamstress, but she was not a girly girl. She preferred trousers to dresses, something Johanna couldn't fathom as to where it came from. Still, she did all the work that was required of her, no matter if it was a dress or a blouse. Will began to teach her how to swordfight a few times a week. She wasn't the best, but if needed, she could possibly hold her own.

On her days off, however, (Y/n) always made it her mission to go to the beautiful beach of Port Royal and look out at the Caribbean Sea. The water was always blue and gorgeous, and the sand felt natural underneath her feet. (Y/n) was always drawn to the sea, and she always kept the little jar of seashells her mother gave her around her neck.

One fateful day, an unknown man waltzed into Port Royal. Little did (Y/n) know, this man would change her life... forever.
