Chapter 13: Meat Bag
“Hey, Lee, wanna watch a movie with me later?” No, that sounds too forward. “Hey, how’s it going? We watched this one movie and I think you’d like it.” No, that sounds awkward. GAH! I was totally stumped. How was I supposed to ask her out on what was practically a date?
I decided to meet up with her during lunch, since Alex was busy that day with some project or another. Weird, though, since she never did spend a lot of time on actual work. She just coasted perpetually, and somehow managed to get good grades. After my classes, during which I spent either planning how I was to ask Lee out or daydreaming about her, I went down to the cafeteria for lunch and looked for her.
I saw that nasty girl I’d met that one time. Marla, I think was her name. I approached her.
“Hey, um, Marla, right?” Here comes the shit-storm.
“Yeah, its me.” The fact that she didn’t snap at me or anything kinda caught me off-guard.
“ Umm... hi. Have you seen Halley today? That is, do you know where she is?” Who am I kidding. I was very caught off-guard.
“Why? Will you make her cry?”
“What?! I’d never do that! Look, just tell me where she is, okay?”
“Fine. She’s somewhere in bio class. And if you make her cry, Imma get you, boy.”
“Great, yeah, sure, whatever. Thanks.” Right, the labs. She must be working on something. I got to the labs and waited for Lee to get out of the lab. She looked like she was getting ready to leave, so I took a deep breath and readied myself. And then I was fiddling with my shirt again. Focusfocusfocusfocus.
““Ummmmm, hi Luke.”
“Gah! Oh, hi Lee. Umm.. how are you?” Okay, man, you’ve rehearsed this more times than you should be proud of. You can do this! She’s stepping closer!!! What do I do??
“Okay. How are you?”
.“Pretty good. Umm.. I was wondering,” Do you want to maybe catch a movie with me after school today. SAY IT! “Doyouwanttomaybecatchamoviewithmeafterschooltoday.” I was so nervous, I forgot to breathe between words, and after I blurted all of that out, I found myself short on breath.
“What?” She sounded confused, so maybe she didn’t understand. Breathe, you idiot!
“Do you want to watch a movie with me this afternoon? There’s one showing that I think you might like, and the soundtrack is really good.” Not bad, idiot.
“Ummmm...aren’t your parents coming home today?”
“They get in pretty late tonight, so there’s no rush.” I can’t possibly explain how much I wanted her to say yes. Please say ok, please say ok, please say
“Ok.” Wow, not a half-second’s delay.
“Great! Umm, I’m not recording today, so do you want to head out together after school later maybe?”
“Ummm, I have to work first...but you could maybe come over to the library and wait for a while.”
“Sure! What time do you get off work?”
“Around 6”
“Great, there’s a showing at 6:30! Is that okay?”
She nodded so hard, I thought she was going to explode. It was kind of adorable, and I got a bit caught up in the moment.
