Two weeks had gone by and everything had gone smoothly. The two men had grown closer to each other every day that passed. Steve could clearly see that Bucky making progress in massive amounts for every day that passed.
Some days were better than others. Some days it almost felt like old times, it felt like nothing ever happened, he could be outgoing, loud, fun, it was like heaven.
Other days he could relapse. He would be quiet, numb, emotionless. He wouldn't say much or do anything, no matter how hard Steve tried to get him to talk to him.
No matter how he was feeling the day, he would almost always have nightmares, some worse than others. Steve would go out to console him most nights, other nights Bucky could build up enough courage to go to Steve's room. They would either go to sleep together, talk about anything and everything or they would watch a movie.
Tonight was one of those nights. Bucky had woke up in cold sweat and he had gone into Steve's room and asked to watch Star Wars. Steve had happily obliged, he had stopped asking what Bucky's nightmares were about because he learned over time that Bucky would never tell.
It was 4:47 AM. They were sitting at each end of the couch watching Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Bucky was looking over at Steve from time to time, longing for human touch, to feel comforted. He sighed heavily and looked back to the screen. Steve of course, immediately noticed and smiled fondly over at Bucky. He opened his arms for him as an invitation. Bucky looked over at him and smiled as a silent 'thank you'. He crawled across the couch and slid perfectly against Steve's side. Their bodies matching like two puzzle pieces.
Bucky leaned his head against Steve's shoulder and Steve cradled him close with his left arm around Bucky's shoulder. Steve used his hand to softly pull his fingers through Bucky's long brown hairs. He immediately softened down and melted into Steve's touch. Steve smiled down and pulled away a strand of brown hair away from Bucky's face.
"Steeeeviee?" Bucky whined.
"Yeah?" Steve said with a chuckle.
"Stevie, I'm tiiireeed."
"Well go to sleep then." Steve smiled fondly at him, this was one of the times he seemed like his old self.
"But I don't wanna." Bucky whined again and pouted.
"We can pause the movie and go to bed if you want to. Don't worry, I'll keep the nightmares away." Steve said with a little yawn, he didn't realize how tired he actually was until now. Bucky took his arms around him and lifted his head to look at Steve with puppy dog eyes.
"So you'll be my personal dreamcatcher?" He said with a wide grin. Steve chuckled and smiled at his adorableness. Seeing Bucky all happy and actually smiling like this, made Steve's stomach fill with butterflies. He adored seeing the brunette this happy.
"Okay sure." He laughed. "Go to sleep, Buck."
"Only if you hold me." He said. Purposefully whining like a little child.
"Okay, I'll hold you, Buck." Steve said with a large smile.
"Good." Bucky said and hid his face in the crook of Steve's neck. "I feel safe with you, Stevie."
Steve did the best he could to not just melt from those six words alone. He blamed Bucky's tiredness completely on this though. Steve pushed back the back cushion so that the couch was like a bed, he could hear Bucky giggle a little against his neck. Steve shook his head at his goofiness.
"You sure you just don't wanna go to my bed instead?" He asked his tired friend.
"Mhm." He shook his head no. "M' tired Stevie." He whined again.
