When I first heard about the kaiju, I thought they had to be a myth. I mean, c'mon. A gigantic monster from another hellscape? How would they survive down there? When would they emerge? But the real question wasn't when. No. It was WHERE.

After the first attacks, the Pan Pacific Defense Corporation (PPDC) realized that these monsters wouldn't stop coming. They had to come up with something, ANYTHING, to combat these creatures. The result? Homemade monsters of our own. The Jaegers. Ginormous mechs controlled by two pilots side by side. They would sync minds through what the AI called a "Neural Handshake". Everything the two pilots knew would be synced with the other pilot and vice versa. This allowed for perfect harmony between the two pilots. Onboard, AI would guide and assist the pilots any way they could. At first, it seemed that humanity had been saved by the new mechanical masterpieces, capable of killing the kaiju. But the kaiju came in larger numbers and bigger forms. Soon, the death toll of the Jaegers grew exponentially to where it was simply impossible to fight back.  My brother and I were both cadets when the PPDC ordered a full evacuation. Our parents, Max and Lucy Maverick, were Jaeger pilots. Not only were they pilots, but they were the best in the entire Jaeger program. Mom and Dad took down a ton of kaiju, even killing a Catagory 4 Copperhead by themselves. But then one day, Matthew, me, and a ton of refugees watched as my parents were killed by the kaiju.

"Kai, why aren't we moving?" Matthew asked me nervously. I peered around the seat. The driver was desperately trying to restart the engine, but it kept stalling out. Deep, loud booms sounded in the distance. Matthew and I looked at each other. As cadets, we had learned exactly what loud booms meant, but more importantly, WHO it meant. The kaiju stepped through half of a glass office building, turning in the direction of the transport rig. Several kids and adults screamed.

I turned towards the front of the transport. "Get us the hell outta here or we'll be crushed!" The driver kept trying to get the engine started, but it still wouldn't turn over. The kaiju neared us, but just as it seemed it would reach the transport, an explosion rocked the side of the monster's face, knocking it to the side. All eyes turned as a white Jaeger emerged from behind a destroyed building. "That's Mom and Dad's Jaeger!" I shouted. Matthew cheered. A few others voiced their relief as well. A speaker crackled, then we heard,

"Sorry we're late," Dad's voice echoed through the speaker. I inwardly smiled. Even in a tough spot, he knew how to make it a little less scary. Then I remembered the kaiju. See, a kaiju doesn't go down from one warhead. Unless you get it to eat it, in which case the whole damn kaiju will go boom. But so will the Jaeger's arm. The pilots also feel everything that happens to the mech, so it means if an arm goes, the pilot's experience a process called a "cold limb." It's like numbing, but it lasts much longer. Sure enough, the kaiju stands back up, enraged. It runs toward Mom and Dad's Jeager, Zeus Fury , and takes a swipe, but it's dodged, then a swift punch to the face. And another. Zeus Fury takes a step back, raises both hands into a fist and slams down on the top of the kaiju's head.

"Yes!" I exclaimed. "C'mon, Mom and Dad! You can do this!"

Then the unthinkable happened. A second kaiju, Catogory 2, came into view followed by another Jaeger. I recognized it as Hunter Virtigo. I couldn't remember who the pilots were at the time. Hunter Virtigo quickly killed its kaiju, then turned to find Zeus Fury slowly getting pushed back. Hunter Virtigo armed its Kryo-Cannons, but just as they had charged up, the kaiju punched down Zeus Fury, forcing it to the ground. A long, sharp spear like bone cut through its hand, and stabbed the con-pod. Upon impact, the entire con-pod exploded.

"NO!" Matthew and I screamed. Hunter Virtigo's Cryo cannon's fired, freezing the kaiju solid. With one solid punch, the frozen monster crumbles apart. Several people cheered, but I could only stare at the smoking wreckage that had been my parent's Jaeger. I heard a sniffle, which snapped me out of my daze. I had to stay strong. If not for me, then it would be for Matthew. He was a year younger than me, only 10. Dad and Mom had asked me that if anything ever happened to them, I would protect him with my life. At first, I told them that nothing would ever happen to them. But reluctantly, I promised to do as they asked me. Until I saw the kaiju kill them, I always thought of it as a simple request. I never thought of it as a responsibility until then. Matthew snuggled close to me, wrapping his arms around my chest. I pulled him close, trying my hardest to stay calm. Hunter Virtigo slowly lifted the transport, bringing it somewhat close to its head.

"Everyone buckle-up. This is about to get bumpy!" A man's voice echoed through the speaker. Matthew and I didn't move. A soft snoring drifted into my ears. I looked and saw Matthew had fallen asleep on me. I gave a soft smile. It been had a long day, with many more to come.

This is my first published fanfic, but I do have some experience writing. Hopefully my writing isn't too boring. Misspelling is also something I see a lot, so I make sure that I haven't spelled stuff wrong. I'll update this fanfic pretty often. Hope you enjoy!

Disclaimer: The name of the OC Jaeger is my own idea, Zeus Fury, but Hunter Virtigo is apart of the actual series. I do not own any of the character's other than the Maverick family and Zeus Fury. All credit goes to Netflix, or the writer of Pacific Rim: The Black.
