"Happy Halloween, Soph!" Jaden grinned, pulling the little seven year old into the air and swinging her around. Sophie giggled joyfully, looking more bright-eyed than any of her family had seen her in two years.
It's been a month since Jaden's suspicions had finally been confirmed about Sophie having powers. The two have only grown closer since. Jaden had always been the popular, sociable kid in school with tons of friends, good grades, and a shoe-in for any college of his choice, and despite this, he could often be found at the Fosters' house, babysitting Sophie and Amy and listening to the little blonde chatter shyly about things she'd seen or heard.
Obviously, it was hard adjusting to this new 'lens' that he looked at the world in. With proof that powers existed, everything seemed so much more... possible? It was difficult to explain, but it was as if he were opening his mind to new possibilities now that he knew that even more seemingly impossible ones existed.
Jaden's older brother, Darryl McLaren suspected that something was up. The boys' two younger brothers, Aaron and Edward didn't really catch anything, but Jaden was pretty sure that had something to do with them being more excited about having a new friend to play with than anything else.
Silena and Sophie's mom, Emma were in the backyard, laughing and conversing as Edward shrieked happily with some of the other boys his age that had come to the barbeque. Jaden choked slightly when Sophie's arms tighten around her neck from where she was on his back. "Sophie--" He croaked, pulling slightly at her arms. She whined, tugging backwards on his neck anxiously. Jaden cringed, turning around a corner and leaving the loud, bustling backyard of the Fosters' home. Clumsily, he loosened the tight grip Sophie had on his neck and brought them into the guest room in the bottom floor where there wasn't anyone. Sophie slid down from his back and looked up at him with big, anxious brown eyes.
He softened as Sophie clung to his shirt, her white-blonde hair swishing in the bright lights of the room. Her eyes were filled with anxiety, and her hands were fisted so tightly into his shirt that they were trembling. Jaden crouched down, eyebrows furrowed and lips pursed tightly in concern. It wasn't like this was the first time this had happened. Even without the constant headaches, two years of it made Sophie anxious around crowds of people and she seemed so sensitive to sound sometimes that it didn't even need to be thoughts. It could've just been loud noise, and she'd get a headache.
"It's too loud," she mumbled grumpily, palms rubbing at her tightly closed eyes. Jaden sighed. He should've expected that she wouldn't react well to the barbecue today.
Sometimes, it felt like he had to be prepared for everything when it came to Sophie. After the accident happened when she was five, she'd just closed off from the rest of the world. Her parents had tried therapy and talking and tried to help but eventually... they just gave up. Jaden knew Sophie's parents loved her, but he also knew they struggled a lot with her. The older Sophie got, the more she seemed to pull away from them.
