It was as if the whole earth shook; that was what it felt like, at least.

I dropped to the floor and covered my head as dust fell from the ceiling onto me. The light's flickered and then went out, leaving me in total darkness.

I stood up and banged at the door.

"Let me out!" I screamed. I heard shooting and men yelling. Something was happening. I was hopeful for a second that it was them, that they had come to get us, but then I remembered that they had no idea where we were.

It wasn't them.

The door suddenly flew open and someone grabbed me by the arm.  When my eyes registered and I saw who it was, my heart sank.

"Don't worry, I didn't forget about you."

The man grabbed my arm and yanked me after him. I tried to struggle out of his tight grip; it felt like he was cutting off my circulation.

All of a sudden, another explosion went off in the room beside us and I was thrown to the side.

I looked over and saw him on his knees, slowly getting up. This was my chance.

I jumped on him and used all my weight to force him to the ground. I grabbed his hands and pinned them on the ground beside his head. He looked up at me and started laughing.

"What are you going to do, little girl? It's not like you can leave here. Remember, we know your every movement."

He was right. But I couldn't stay here. Not now.

He started to struggle out of my grasp. I knew he was stronger than me, so I knew I didn't have much time. I needed to get out of here, and this was my only change.

He got his hands free from my grasp and wrapped them around my neck. I clawed desperately at his hands, trying to loosen his grip, but he wouldn't budge. I gasped for air, but it was useless.

I let go of his hands and instead grabbed his head. I lifted his head off the ground by his hair before slamming it back down. His grip loosened, but only slightly, so I lifted his head back up again and slammed it down one more time. There was a crack, and then his arms went limp and I could breathe again.

I rolled on my side and choked as I took in deep breaths. I didn't have time to recover, though. I sat up and reached down to take off my shoe. I fished around in my sock until I felt the cold metal object I had hidden there that had been digging into my skin. I pulled out the knife and then ducked as another explosion nearby went off and I heard the shooting getting closer.

I looked around, making sure I was still alone. When I was sure it was all clear, I looked at the skin on my left arm, below my shoulder where there was a large wound that had just started to heal. That was where they had put it. I knew I needed to do this. If I didn't, I would never get away. They would find me.

I took a deep breath and gripped the small knife in my right hand.

I gritted my teeth and then stabbed my left arm, screaming out in pain.

Three weeks earlier.

"Think it's alive?"

I heard a door close.

"I'm not sure. Maybe we should just put it out of its misery."

There was a pause and some snickering.

"Yah, it looks like it's in pretty bad shape."

"Y'all are hilarious," I mumbled and cracked open one eye, peeking out from behind my hair that was covering my face.

Rosita and Michonne were standing by the door, smiling as if they were enjoying my misery.

Rosita walked into the living room and opened the curtains.

"Ugh," I moaned and buried my face into the couch under the covers. "You two are monsters."

Last night had been a rare night where we hadn't been worried or stressed about how to stay alive or how to keep Alexandria safe. On her run yesterday, Michonne had come across a basement filled with alcohol. It wasn't essential, but it was nice for everyone to relax for once and we decided to celebrate last night.

"You downed your drink so fast," Rosita laughed.

"It just tasted so damn good," I groaned into the couch and then removed the blanket from over my head and squinted into the bright light.

"I didn't realize you were such a lightweight," Michonne said.

"It's been... I don't even know, years since I've had a drink?" I said, defending myself.

I slowly sat up and stood to my feet and I rubbed my temples.

"I barely had anything," I moaned. It had only been one beer, but I downed it so fast. I also wasn't the tallest and didn't have an ounce of body fat anymore, so it went right to me.

Rosita snickered as I walked into the kitchen. I slumped down in the seat at the island and rested my head on the counter. I closed my eyes as I rested my cheek on the cold counter.

"I need to get ready. We're fixing the south wall today, right?" I said to both of them with my eyes still closed.

"It's okay," I heard Michonne say.

"No, I need to eat," I said, trying to convince myself and push away the feeling of nausea that came over me when I thought of having breakfast.

I lifted my head off the counter but then paused as I pushed down the nausea again.

"Sloane. Rest," Rosita said as she placed a hand on my shoulder. "Seriously, we're okay. Go back to sleep and come find us later."

I looked at Rosita and Michonne. "Sorry," I said. I felt horrible.

"Seriously, it's alright. You work harder than most."

"It was nice, though," Michonne said as she walked to the door. "To forget about everything for one night."

"We still on for that run tomorrow?" Rosita asked as she followed Michonne. "You think you'll be better by then?" She laughed.

I perked up slightly, always down for a run. "Yes, we're still on. I'll be fine."
