2. Excuse

I go into the secretary's office and go over my usual excuse in my head: I was thinking of my mom and lost track of time. Ms. Annie usually forgives me because she knows that my father is a big support to this school, financial wise and she wouldn't want to upset his one and only daughter. But today something changes in her normal speech of: it's okay, everyone makes mistakes, try better next time. This time, she says a total different pattern of speech:

"Sorry I'm late, I was thinking about my mother and I lost track of time. You know 5 years ago she died today." I say innocently.

"That's no excuse" She begins,"You've been late to school all last week, Miss Parker!" She raises her voice like she has an authority over me."Listen I don't want to shout but I've had enough" She says, as she finally realized she was screaming. "Next time your late, you will have detention for a week."

"Fine" I say rudely. "But expect my dad to know about this and find a way to fire you" I say, but I know my dad can't do anything. But it might scare her. "You don't understand how hard it is to loose someone" I say. "And by the way that outfit is so last year" I add as I storm out of the office.

Class passes by slowly. I try to concentrate on the equations that I have to find the answer to but I just can't stop thinking about my mother. She loved math, she told me once she wanted to be a math teacher. But her mother who was all about elegance always discouraged her dream. I miss my mother so much... That's the only thought I keep in my mind until lunch.

Authors note:

First things first. I really want to explain this Alexis character because she might be misunderstood. She might be really mean but bear with her, she may or may not get better. But there are way more scenes in this book with her being a little mean. But it's all to make this story more meaningful at the end!
