WARNING - VIOLENCE AND LANGUAGE

I woke up feeling a lot more refreshed. I got up and walked to a small pond nearby that Toby was sitting next to. He seemed to hear me walking towards him so he stood up. We decided to continue travelling further into the forest, to see if we could find any weapons, after I gave my gun to Zoey.

We had been walking for a few hours when another cannon could be heard. I sighed and stopped walking. I was about to say something when the faint footsteps of people walking started to become audible, and worryingly get louder quite quickly. Toby could apparently hear them too, and motioned for me to start running.

Suddenly, something knocked me over from behind as I heard the footsteps of two people running into the clearing. Once my face collided with the ground I was once standing on, I felt the bone in my nose crack and it felt like I had been punched in the face. A liquid which I presumed to be blood splattered on my face when shouting was suddenly audible.

A large hand grabbed my right arm and forcibly pulled me up. My brain couldn’t keep up with how quickly everything was going which made me incredibly dizzy, so I was unable to stand properly. I felt myself falling back down, all the images I saw jumping at random intervals and going double at times.  Before I collided with the ground again, both of my arms were harshly grabbed again, and I was pulled back up. I got a brief glimpse of two people in front of me, neither of which I could immediately recognise before my face came into contact with something metallic, forcing me to spit some blood out.

In a way, it snapped me out of my dizziness slightly.

“Stand up you stupid bitch!” I heard a man’s voice shout at me, which sounded a lot like Sjin’s. I managed to balance myself slightly better half stood up, still not being able to see things properly. All of my surroundings were still spinning and figures were morphing into each other, creating one big mess of what I presumed to be people and trees.

“It’s a shame, isn’t it?”

I looked up in front of me and could just about make out the face of a woman. My vision finally focused enough to make out the features of the figures and it was suddenly obvious that Minty was standing before me, holding a terrified Toby by the neck of his shirt.

“How Martyn wanted you to help him win these games, so he could have all the power he needed, ad yet, here you are, weak and helpless.”

I narrowed my eyes at her but before I could react any more, she withdrew a dark purple blade from its sheath and held it to Toby’s neck. His face immediately drained of any colour that was once there, and his eyes widened, looking to me. With this, I lunged forward, which was not successful in any way, and the back of my legs were kicked, causing me to fall to my knees. I cried out in frustration, my inability to find any words reflecting on my inability to help the situation.

“Pluto, look at me!” I heard Toby shout. I lifted my head and gritted my teeth, trying not to scream out again. “You’re going to win this okay? Do not let Martyn win. Promise me this!” His voice croaked at the end of the sentence, and it was clear that he was fighting back tears. I could do nothing but nod and occasionally murmur broken strands of ‘I promise’.

I was helpless than to watch as the woman taunted me. Toby was desperately looking at me, pleading, to do anything. Sjin’s grip on me was tightening, and Toby’s cheeks were drenched in tears.  Suddenly, he closed his eyes tight and everything stopped momentarily. Nothing could be heard aside from both mine and Toby’s shaking breaths, and nobody moved. I, too, closed my eyes and was about to try to relax.

“How does it feel, knowing that you’ve failed the only person you cared about?” She spoke. I opened my eyes and saw her grinning maliciously at me, before she removed the blade from Toby’s neck. Paralysed by fear, I watched, wide eyed as she swung the blade into the air and brought it down though his chest.

All I could hear was screaming, and I had no clue whose it was.

His cannon rung throughout the arena the moment his body hit the ground. It rung in my ears as I struggled to process any thoughts, let alone make any noise. I struggled out of Sjin’s grip to be kicked forwards in the back. Scrambling forwards, I reached Toby’s lifeless body, as Minty withdrew the blade from him. There was nothing I could do as I watched his body slowly disperse into tiny pixels that eventually consumed his entire body.

I stayed, crouched on the ground, tears stinging my eyes, unable to control my breathing. Any attempts at communication were futile, the only legible words escape my mouth were chocked up refusals to believe the events that I had just witnessed.

Minty started laughing behind me.

“How could you..?” I whispered. She immediately stopped laughing.

“How? He was just a pawn in these games. Useless.” She said laughing again. Hearing that last word felt like I had just been hit with a sledgehammer, and I turned round to face her.

“You’re a monster!” I shouted at her, and threw both of my arms out in frustration when suddenly everything went white and a searing pain coursed through my body.
