I shook my head and closed my eyes. No, that can’t be him. He was the first person I met when I first came to this place. He was the only person that didn’t try to kill me when I first met them. Why has he only now just appeared again and laughs when he essentially just knocked me out of a tree?
“No. I know you. I saw you when-” I said but I was interrupted by Ridge quickly flying to close to my face and holding a finger to my lips.
“Your parents left you here. I know. Martyn’s not the only one who knows a lot about you. In fact, I’m the one he found it out from. You could really help him out with something you know?” He moved away from me and flew up to a branch opposite me. “You two, working together! Never in my whole life was I expecting this to happen.”
I looked at the man in confusion. I don’t understand why I am so important in helping Martyn. He’s an earth spirit and I’m just a random useless person who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“How could I possibly help him? What could I do to help an almost unstoppable force?” I asked. With this, I pushed myself up so that my back was leaning against the tree’s trunk. My arm didn’t look particularly healthy, and it was stinging with pain. I should probably do something about that if I ever manage to get down from the tree. Ridge flew around me a few times before settling on a nearby branch.
“I guess nobody’s told you this stuff have they. How typical of them. See Pluto, this is why it’s fun to be the ruler of this pathetic little realm. You know everything; secrets, pasts, the lot. And the best part? Telling people secrets about their loved ones, their friends, enemies, even themselves, and watching the chaos unfold.” He said, locking eyes with me the entire time. His eyes lit up slightly when he mentioned chaos. I’m quite glad I haven’t had too many encounters with him yet.
“But... I still don’t understand how I could help Martyn.” I said again. He continued to keep eyes locked with me and he paused for a moment before replying.
“He needs your help with something, and even I think that’s it’s a good job he found you. Like I was saying before, it’s fun to watch chaos unfold. But it’s even more fun when you place all of these people with all of these problems with each other in a confined space, and let only one come out as a victor. It’s a fun little game I like to play sometimes. That’s-” He was cut off the loud cracking noise and a lot of rustles of leaves.
I threw my good arm in front of my face to protect it from anything falling. I head lots of commotion above me, and I could feel thing falling around and on me. Suddenly something quite large must have hit the branch I was sitting on, and the slow cracking began underneath me. It didn’t take me long to realise that the branch was beginning to fall, and I needed to find a way to get down soon.
Moving my arm away from my face slightly, I saw someone hastily climbing up the tree I was currently on. Once they reached just below me, I shifted slightly closer to the tree’s trunk to let them up. When they had reached me, I realized that it was Toby. He quickly smiled at me, and then started tying a bit of rope around my waist. I held onto the large amount of coil that was left with the good arm whilst he quickly threw the rest of it above and over the branch above us. He caught it again and secured the end of it around his own waist.
“When I say, step backwards and I’ll help you get down. Ready?” He asked. I had so many things going through my head that I nodded without thinking, and watched as Toby jumped backwards off the branch and disappeared. Quickly, I jumped backwards too, forgetting that I wouldn’t be able to support myself with one arm. I began falling quickly before I stopped abruptly, causing me to swing around violently. I looked up and saw Toby holding onto both of our ropes, whist trying to lower his self as quick as he could.
He quickly got to me and we both worked together to try and get down from the tree. There was still leaves, branches and other various foliage falling all around us, and suddenly there was around loud crack. We stopped moving down and simultaneously looked up to the branch I was previously on falling towards us. In the few milliseconds we had to decide what to do, I realized that Toby had no clue on what to do, so I chose the only option I could think of.
I started to swing myself on the rope, making us go from side to side. There was a slim chance we couldn’t be hit by it, but it was better than staying in the way of the falling branch. Toby realized and began swinging too, and in a few seconds we had just enough force to grab onto a nearby branch. Toby grabbed onto with one hand and caught my good hand. We both watched as the large branch plummeted to the ground, landing on the floor with a loud band. I saw Toby flinch slightly, before holding my hand tighter and letting go of the branch. We swung back and forth for a bit, before we came to a slight stop, where Toby hoisted us down the last 20 metres.
As soon as we reached the floor, he let go of me and began untying the rope. After getting over my initial distraction over the amount of debris on the once peaceful clearing, I undid the rope too. As soon as I had let go of the rope, I saw Toby sprinting over to the tent, where he picked up a sheath that had sword in it and swung it over his head as he ran back. Once he reached me, he grabbed my hand and pulled me away from whatever was happening above us. As we were running out of the clearing I caught a glimpse of green and golden sparks falling to the floor, before it was out of my view, obstructed by the tight circle of trees that surrounded the clearing.
