Chapter 1

Ocean Ruck

January 12, 2145.

"Rematch! I call rematch! You cheated!"

"I'm sorry. That's all for me today, maybe tomorrow?" I asked. He stood up, knuckles on the table, shaking his head with an angry look on his face. I stared at him, no emotion on my face.

"No! You cheated!" He said, pointing at me. "If you leave, you can't play with me anymore!" I just played Alien Invasion with Greg, one of the students that go to the same school as me, Command School. Here, we learn the basics of commanding an army.

This school is a very hard school to get into. Takes a lot of knowledge to get into this school. Only one out of fifty students who put applications in get in, luckily, I made it in.

I'm what you call, a Third. The government only has a family make two children. You need special permission to make a third child. I looked at Greg then nodded.

"Thank you for your time." I got up and got my PD (portable device) and left the room. Command School is very strict. One thing they do at this school is put a monitor inside you, in the back of your neck. They put it in you to see what you see, hear what you hear, and know what you're thinking. Keeps you in your place, I guess.

It was after school, and Mother is going to pick me up today. I have two older brothers, Aaron and Alex. Aaron is the oldest at eighteen years old and Alex is the middle kid at seventeen years old. Aaron does not like me, but Alex loves me so much and I love him so much too.

I only have one best friend, Courtney Howell. She is the same age as Alex, and they are also great friends. I was walking to the front of the school. That's where Mother picks me up.

"Hey!" I heard someone yell. I stopped walking and turned around. I saw Courtney running up to me. Then stopped at my side. We started to walk together. "Did you hear the news?" Courtney asked. I looked up at her.

"What news?" I asked with much confusion in my voice. Courtney smiled.

"Well, the General from the Space School is going to watch us through our monitors." Courtney explained. I shot her a confused look.

"Am I suppose to be jumping with joy?" I asked sarcastically. Courtney started to laugh.

"Yes! That means that the General is going to choose two girls and two boys to go with him to-"

"Space School!" I yelled, cutting off Courtney.

"Exactly. It'll take him a couple of days for him to choose but he's picking people already." Courtney said. I smiled.

"This could be our chance! We need to do good on this." Courtney nodded in a agreement. We stopped walking at the end of the sidewalk where Mother picks me up. Courtney and I sat down on the brick wall.

"I think that that one kid is going to make it." Courtney implied, pointing straight. I looked over and saw a really tall guy standing in the parking lot alone, looking around.

"Who's that?" I asked. I looked at Courtney.

"His names Ender Wiggin. He's a shy guy. I don't know, he doesn't have lots of friends. But he's very smart." Courtney paused and looked at me. "He's also a Third." I nodded.

Courtney isn't a Third. She has an older brother, Dylan, who's only one year older. I have the biggest crush on him. But, I really don't talk to him. I saw Mother's car pull up. I stood up and looked at Courtney.

"I'll see you later."
