"BOOM! The elevator sounded..." John said. "Of course, it was your parents. They appeared out of nowhere. Listen, your parents might be good and noble people, but I prefer to view the world not in shades of black or white, but in shades of grey. I gasped and shouted in fear, "PLEASE- D- DON'T KILL ME!!". Your parents glanced at each other, then laughed. "W-What's so funny? Are-Are you two not going to kill me?" I asked out of curiosity. "Oh, no. Well, not for a long while. You're not completely useless yet," Your father replied with a cunning grin. "I-I don't understand..." I said. Your father reached into his pocket, pulled a gun out and pointed it to my head. "What don't you understand?" Your father asked. "Why-Why am I of use now? Why don't you just- just kill me now?" I asked recklessly. "Well, we still need information from you. What do you know?" Your father asked. "W-What do you mean 'what do you know'?" I asked. "You know a family secret of ours, don't you?" Your father replied. "W-Well... I know that you guys eat cookies for breakfast sometimes," I lied. But, well, technically, I wasn't lying. It's true, no?""Oh cut the crap and carry on. Or else, I'll have to make you carry on," Rider said threateningly.
John frowned. "Yes, well, anyway, after I said that, your father rolled his eyes and said, "Cut the crap,","
The children looked at each other and exchanged looks.
"Are you making this up as you go?" Rose asked.
"No, I promise you, I'm not. You're just too much like your father, Rider," John answered.
"Stop flattering me, it doesn't work. So if you don't shut up about all that crap, I'm going to have to present you with a death sentence. Interested?" Rider said sarcastically.
"Ugh... honestly, you guys are such spoilt brats," John said unthinkingly.
"Chief police officer, is there any way to order a death sentence right here and right now? I have a lawyer and I'm willing to pay extra," Rider said.
"Well, believe me, I want to give him a death sentence, but I have no idea. You'll have to ask your lawyer about that one. Oh, and, call me chief," The chief said.
"Hold on, I have more. If you sentence me to death, you'll never find out and the answers will die with me," John said.
"Oh shut your ass," Rider said rudely.
"Okay, sure," John said.
"Okay, listen to me right now. If you don't start talking about proper stuff, you're gonna die here, right now, with no death sentence. Just me and my hands," Rider threatened.
John nodded.
"Well... tell us why there was no trace of you at all," Rose demanded.
"Oh, that wasn't my doing. Trust me, I didn't shut the cameras off or anything. It was your parents. And you have to believe me. I mean, you could get a lie detector right now. I'm ready for it," John said.
"Hmm.. chief?" Rider asked.
"Possible. Definitely possible,"
The chief opened the door and asked two other backup officers to take care of John and the children.
"Look, I'm not lying, alright?" John reassured.
"We'll see about that in a while," Rose said.
A few minutes later, the door flung open again. It was the chief. He nodded to the two backup officers, gesturing that they had done their job. He then plugged the lie detector onto John and started the machine up.
"Say something true about yourself, John. And you had better not lie," The chief instructed.
"I'm John," John said.
"Beep" the lie detector sounded, indicating that it was a true statement.
"Okay, children, you can ask him questions now," the chief said kindly.
"Did you kill our parents because they were trying to kill you?" Rose asked.
"Yes," John said.
"Beep" the machine sounded.
The children looked at each other.
"Um... were our parents bad people?" Rose asked again.
"I don't know," Rider replied.
"Beep," the machine sounded again.
"Uh, did you have good intentions?" Rose asked, this time unsure.
"Yes," John answered.
"Beep," The machine sounded again.
"Um... guys?" Rose said.
"I know... I can't believe it either," Rider replied.
