Chapter Five
⚡️"BRUCE GAVE HIM A SEDATIVE," RHODEY INFORMED, THE GROUP OF FIVE LINGERING OUTSIDE THE INFIRMARY. His voice was heavy with worry for his best friend health and whether Tony will be able to bounce back from this. "He's gonna probably be out for the rest of the day."
Laurel sat at the empty couch with her arm lifted over the back, legs resting on the crowded coffee table and spun her retracted bo-staff swiftly between her fingers. Even if she had an extreme sense of distaste for the man, it didn't eliminate her concern for Tony's wellbeing. Aside from her, Steve and Natasha stood side by side, looking at Rhodey with similar hints of sympathy. Across from them, Melissa and Carol occupied the other side of the room, their hands interlocked with the hybrid's head resting on the Kree's shoulder. Melissa stared distantly at the shimmering metal floors.
Carol gently lifted her shoulder, causing Melissa to look up at her before removing her head fully. The Kree woman looked over to the three Avengers. "You guys take care of him, and I'll bring him a Xorrian elixir when I come back," Carol stated, moving swiftly away. Melissa lingered behind despite having agreed to join her girlfriend.
Steve's eyes followed as Carol passed him. "Where are you going?"
"To kill Thanos," Carol replied without hesitation, freezing when she realised Melissa wasn't by her side.
Natasha spared a short glance at Steve then Melissa, before calling out to Carol. "Hey. You know, we usually work as a team here... and, uh, between you and I, morale's a little fragile."
"Wow, alright Captain Obvious," Laurel muttered as she passed Steve and Natasha, finding no reason for her to linger around. "No need to be so secretive." The Canary ignored Natasha's cold glare as she passed Carol and disappeared deeper into the Compound.
"She's... cold..." Carol uttered, glancing over her shoulder before looking back ahead and smiling softly when Melissa joined her side.
The hybrid offered a small shrug. "Surprisingly, that's just her..." she admitted, lips pressed together into a thin line.
"Look," Steve said sternly, catching the pair's attention and dragging it away from each other. "We realise up there is more your territory, but this is our fight, too."
Natasha lifted her left arm and gestured to the Superhuman, who stood by her girlfriend's side and refuse to leave. "And were you really just gonna leave Melissa-" Natasha went to comment only to be interrupted.
"Actually..." Melissa dragged out, shifting uncomfortably on her feet. "I was going to go with Carol," she admitted, looking down in shame at the thought of having been ready to just ditch her friends. She regretted even thinking about how quickly she agreed to go.
"Mel, think about it though," Rhodey spoke up from the hollow doorway behind Natasha and Steve. "Do either of you even know where he is?" His voice was cold, but the harshness to the tone was more targeted towards Carol then it was Melissa.
Melissa bit down on her tongue, looking at the slick tiling before glancing at Carol. "Well, we have someone in the Compound who should know..." However, no one but Melissa understood who she was referring to, the speedster's lifestory not being discussed by those who were yet to actually meet her. Nebula was one option, but the more reliable one would be the teenager who has fought Thanos twice.
