Chapter 1: Kyrnn
Third Person POV
Kyrnn huffed as she ran blindly through the dense forest. Breathing hard, she thought, the stupid Spidrens don't know when to give up! At this point, I shall have to confront them.
Whirling around, she unsheathed her beloved daggers with a flick her wrist. Jumping back into a tree, her elven ears pricked for the slightest sound, she quickly nocked an arrow and aimed at the oncoming monster.
It was truly a hideous thing. The giant Spider stared hungrily at her while clicking it hairy legs. Kyrnn shivered in disgust. No way was she going to become a meal to these creatures. Not now, and not ever. "Honestly," she muttered. "What did I do to deserve this?" as she thought back to that morning.
She had lost her village to an orc raid the week before, just right outside what her father had once called 'Mirkwood Forest'...and was probably lost somewhere in it now, as she had just blindly run into the woods to escape the hideous orcs.
The village had never stood a chance, she thought bitterly. A handful of untrained men against orcs? It was both pitiful and yet laughable. She shuddered as she recalled the burning smell of fire and the dead bodies against the ground.
So much blood.
So many lives had been lost in that one night, she mourned. And my family...no, she mustn't think about that. They would want her to be strong, she told herself.
Blinking back tears, she thought of her now dead parents...and her precious sister, Almeriya. They had been all human, and her ada, father, and naneth, mother had taken pity on the abandoned elfling that had been left on their doorstep. She had grown up with a sister, but was never treated differently, something she was always thankful for.
Her sister. Her precious, precious sister - the one who had kept all the bullies who had teased Kyrnn because she was different - was gone. But all had been well, until that fateful night.
Kyrnn shook her head of pale golden hair, sighing inaudibly. "Be brave. Be strong as mirthil," she chanted over and over again inside her head. Her aquamarine eyes scanned the area, well aware of the slightest movement.
Suddenly vaulting off a strong branch, she wheeld around and slashed and ducked as a poisonous leg came at her, then clashed with a dagger. Wincing as the creature landed a glancing blow on her non-guarded arm, she inhaled sharply in pain before stabbing the filthy creature in the belly, making the stupid creature wail before ending its misery. Kyrnn suddenly heard the now familiar click-clacks of the spidrens' legs, and she swore furiously.
"I swear, by the Valor-" she abruptly cut off as Kyrnn realized that they could hear her, and now could therefore pinpoint her location.
Glaring ferociously at the forest around her, her elven ears prickled as she became aware of even more spidrens, probably seeking revenge for their fallen kind. Groaning fired a warning arrow before turning, and ran as quickly as her wounded arm allowed her to. Already could she feel the poison spreading through her veins.
Running blindly and turning and twisting this way and that, like a coward, she fled.
Biting back a groan of pain, she sped forth and put many miles before coming to an abrupt halt and collapsing on a nearby tree.
So much blood, she thought. And probably poisoned too, she added grimly.
Dizzyly, she gripped the locket given from her birth mother - the only thing she had of her - and one that she could never open, and then she prayed.
Just let me live to see tomorrow's dawn, she begged the Valor before falling unconscious. The last thing she saw before she collasped on the forest floor was a wave of light blonde hair, and ice blue eyes staring down at her.
Please don't kill me, she thought.
