Chapter 12

Flashback continued...

Nooooooo! Thranduil thought as he collasped on the stone floor. Elareìna!

He frantically crouched down and buried his head in her hair. Her pure white hair, once shining like the stars, was now defiled with blood, and another substance he shuddered to to think about. The smell of sunflowers faintly lingered through the dirt and grime.

"Stay with me gì mellîn. Everything will be alright my love," Thranduil whispered.

"Odulen an edrith angin. I am here to save you," he soothed her lovingly.

Slowly, she coughed, and looked up in disbelief at her husband.

"This...this is not real is it? H-has Irmo granted me my desire one last time?" Elareìna coughed.

"No. I assure you, I am here. Námo will not take you from me iust yet." Thranduil smiled tenderly at his queen, sadness and regret flickering on his features. His handsome face was full of remorse.

"Forgive me...i-if I had not i-insisted on going, this w-would not be so..." The elleth trailed off, staring at her beloved's face.

"Iston I nîf lïn...I know your face," she smiled weakly. " At long last, the valar have decided for me to rest. Forrgive me.... If I had not gone, perhaps things would be d-different..." she trailed off, coughing on her own blood.

"And L-legolas!" She exclaimed. "I leave him w-without a mother, and y-you...forgive me, my king!

"Do not waste your words...and there was never anything to forgive. Elereìna, just stay. Just stay...with me! The battle is over. The healers are coming as we speak. Cling to your fëa a little longer!" He urged desperately.

By this time, Elrond and the elite guard had found them and stood a slight distance away in respect. The guard bowed their heads in acknowledgement of the king and queen. Elrond face, however, was full of realization, and then sorrow as he understood what was taking place. He rushed forwards.

Despair emanated from Thranduil as he watched Elrond glowing with words of power as he chanted a healing spell frantically, for the Great Elvenking knew it was useless. His false hope had withered away the moment he had sawn her, and if their bond, the bond of mates could not heal her fëa, then nothing could. Her aura was growing dimmer as time passed. For the first time in his rule, he was helpless, only able to watch as the one of the two people he loved painfully died.

"Sister..." Elrond forcefully said. "Melda tarï , beloved queen of the woodland realm, listen to my voice! Lasto beth nîn, tolo dan nan galad. I guide you to the light."

Again and again he chanted. At first, it seemed as if it was working. Elereìna opened her eyes, and light began to glow all around her, encasing her into a healing cacoon. But it was useless. Slowly, the light faded, and she gasped as the power disappeared from around her. Elrond of Rivendell, most powerful healer, could not heal his sister.

But Thranduil was stubborn.

"No." Thranduil refused to admit. "You will not fade! As your king, I forbid it. As your husband, I forbid it!"

The lady of Greenwood glanced at her brother, and a look of love, sadness, and finally understanding passed between. Elrond slowly nodded as she turned her head slowly to the face of her beloved.

"Thranduil..." She started. "Will you promise me something?"

"For you, I would defy Elentári himself," he vowed.

"Then p-promise me...promise me t-this." By now, the lady of the woodland realm had Lost almost her her strength.

"If t-the Valar ever g-give you another c-chance....take i-it...a lonely e-existence is always p-painful... P-promise me!" She whispered, determination in her gaze as she held in his icy blue eyes.

Thranduil was filled with shock. How could she, of all people ask him of this. Every elf from a small age knew that they were only gifted one soulmate, the other half of their existence. It was only in one rare case that the Valar had granted an elleth another mate. But he couldn't refuse her, not when she was like this....

"Very well, gi melìn. However, this is most unlikely, my love..."he dropped his voice as the pain became more and more evident on his features.

"stay, with me, my love....please!" He begged futilely.

"Thank you...I w-will always l-love you...a-and p-pray that y-you find...h-hppiness..." The queen gasped as her breath became shallower still.

"No! Do you hear me?! I forbid this!" Thranduil growled desperately.

But she smiled, and closed her eyes...and her fëa slowly became weaker and weaker. Then the earth was still. And so was she.

*End Flashback*

Thranduil's POV

I awoke. Tears shamelessly made their way down my face. I only ever removed my mask and allowed the pain and sadness to show when I was alone.

 But I wasn't.

By my side, a trembling feminine hand weakly wiped away a tear.  For a moment I thought I saw the ghost of my beloved reaching at me.

"My lord Thranduil..." Pharâzindil soothingly said.

I blinked in relisation. Of course it would be foolish to wish that my past love still existed.

When had she awoken? I thought, surprised. But I was reminded of the situation I was in. Quickly, I slapped her hand -  Pharâzindil's hand - away and stared upon the elleth, replacing my unemotional mask.

"Do not touch me elleth. Next time I shall throw you in the dungeons." I growled out.  Rising quickly, I exited the room with my cape behind me, trying to ignore the turmoil I knew would be left behind, and paying no heed to the stunned (and hurt) expression on her face as I closed the oaken doors shut tight.

I must contact Elrond, I thought, attempting to distract myself.

It was long overdue to figure out the mysteries of this elleth. But I could not keep my love's last words rang through my head as I hurriedly made my way to more private chambers.

" If t-the Valar ever g-give you another c-chance....take i-it...a lonely e-existence is always p-painful... P-promise me!"

Promise me....Elereìna's voice whispered.

Shaking it off, I walked thought the halls filled with light of breaking dawn. I will never love another ever again. Not after her, I vowed as I reminisced about the past.

Never again...

And with that, I walked on to find the Lord of Imladris.
